I think someone did this on the h.com forum, but I'm curious as to what everyone's barns look like. I told my fiance that someday I'd love to build out own barn, and said maybe we could do like a coverall type building and put stalls on one end and have an arena to ride in. I also wondered, if anyones to include it, how much your barn cost. I think we can do some of the work in the future on our own, but who knows! I love to see other people's barns. If you board, include your stable too!

This is our barn, it was OK for one horse, not so good for 2. I wish I had stalls. If we ever get money [Not likely] we will live with the horses, we will have a place with stalls on one side and living quarters on the other. For now this is what we have though, both guys fit in the run in area nicely, I just worry if one needs to be in because he's sick what will I do since the space we have inside where we keep hay is not big enough for a stall even though that was what we tried to do when we had it done.

I think your barn is adorable oursarge. Unlike my plain ole metal building!

I'm trying to do several things, but I'll post some pics of our humble place in a bit, and perhaps a few of the proposed BaywindFarm design too later. :)

Check out these links for some ideas!

Our barn is a hay barn. We have 2 stalls, but they are configured to distribute innoculations to cows. No horse stalls yet. We're building a run in in the next couple weeks to allow our horses a place to get out of the cold Jan/Feb winds.

Thank you WB it just doesn't work for 2 horses if there is an emergency and one needs to stay in. It was perfect for one horse, I could close the big door and he could stick his head out the window. I only did that maybe twice during ice storms. He hated being closed in. I couldn't close both of them in there, they both fit and they do spend time in there together but if they got fighting or something there'd be no place for one to run to so I have never tried closing the big door. I'd love to have stalls but this is what we have for now.

Can't wait to see the Baywind Farm design. I'd love to post my dream place here but since it's a private home in VT I don't know if they'd appreciate it. When I walked in that place I knew that was my dream house! I have been obsessed with it since. It's totally perfect for me.

Those links are great, I actually found something that we might be able to do to our barn to make stalls, under the first link it's the 2 horse barn, if we added an addition on our barn we could have 2 stalls, if we added more on there'd be room for the tractor to keep it out of the weather. That would be great 'til we could do what I really want if we can ever do it.

There are some really nice barns there. Thank you!

If we ever get money [Not likely] we will live with the horses, we will have a place with stalls on one side and living quarters on the other.

I think we've all wanted to live with our horses, but if you ever get to the point where you can add living quarters on to your barn, check with your insurance company before you even set one block for the foundation.

That is a big no-no with the insurance companies and if one insists on that kind of an arrangement (like I tried with my insurance company years ago), they will politely hand you a list of codes regarding the 92 foot thick (over statement:) firewall you would need between the living quarters and the barn.

I know there are folks who have apartments above their barns for hired help but, as far as I am aware, that's also uninsurable.

Hopefully someone with that sort of arrangement will come in:cowboy:

This is the best one I have of my barn. it is 5 years old, 24 X 50 and I wish it were bigger, but I cut it down so hubby could have a 30X50 workshop that he deserves and really knows what to do with all the specialty tools in there:cowboy:

It has 3 box stalls, two of which are 12 x 14, one run-in stall, a 10X10 "kitchen area" where the breaker box is, and room left to cram 330 bales of hay.

I didn't want a tack room because I have always kept my good stuff at the house - even as a kid.

We paid to have the wiring run underground from the house to the barn, they put in the breaker box, and Mr. WTW. did the wiring from that point.

The overhang is 20 X 24, insulated roof (as is the inside of the barn), and there are two outdoor electric boxes on the support poles where we plug in the heaters for the stock tanks in the winter.

We put pipe panel up for stalls with the intent of them being temporary, but they are still there because my horses don't fight and it let's a lot more light and air thru that little barn.

I have two 10' over head doors, one man door, two slide windows. The aisleway is an escape aisle only.

If I bath a horse I take them outside in the grass, drop the rope and have at it - lol lol

There's about 18K - all totalled in this barn. A lot of money for nothing that is even a "1" on the fancy scale and we did some of the stuff ourselves. Believe me when I say, this is the nicest barn I've ever owned - lol

Just for the record, that is NOT my house in the background. It was part of the old farm when it got split and auctioned off, and is now a rental house ---- oh happy happy day:(

We're kindof in the same boat, we've removed all the partitions on the horse side so all three are free to come and go. If someone really needed to be stalled, we'd have to scramble to put something back up.

This is about the third remodel of this setup since I started. The first winter I had only the lean-to for Bay and the pony, and it wasn't enough.

The second year I added the two stalls along the back of the metal building, but then needed to remodel again when we got the third horse. We moved the stalls to three down one side and cut doors to the outside. Last year we removed the dividers so they all come and go.

It's a tight space, but it works for use really well for just a rental place and three horses who all get along.

Never thought about insurance but I know they do have plans for house barn combos and the people in VT lived in theirs and I know they are insured. I have a timberframe magazine with the barn on the bottom and the living quarters over top, fancy place. Nothing we could afford but very beautiful.

Interesting thought though and if we can do it we will check with the insurance co. We had already planned on the fire wall between the spaces. We wouldn't be doing it onto our barn it would be a whole new structure. Chances are we can't do it anyway but if we can we will.

WB they all look comfortable and it looks like they have plenty of room to move around in. They are all so pretty.

Not insurable as a house, I would assume? I too will be curious because our BaywindFarm Barn may have a living quarters, but the living quarters will be a fraction of the barn's value.

As long as they'd pay up for the barn, we could maybe take a loss on the LQ.

OK - Here's the BaywindFarm Barn I drew years ago... when such things were still done by hand. ;)

I've looked at it a lot since and I still like it. We'll have to see what happens to it when I actually start talking to an architect or a builder.

It has a small, but functional indoor arena. We'd probably have a larger outdoor one. Runs off of every stall with the doors open most of the time, and hopefully the runs opening up to larger pastures beyond. Hard to say how all that would be laid out until we have the land! :)

But it will be located next to forest with trails, and we will cater mostly to trail riders.

http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1028&stc=1&d=1227669055

Layout... It looks like the arena is walled in, it's not. It would be either a halfwall or rails so you'd look all the way across. The apartment would really be an office too.

http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1029&stc=1&d=1227669094

This I still like. Every stall has it's own locking tack room.

I like WB. When I had stalls rented at Ft Lewis, we had a tack room per owner, not per stall, but the tack rooms were a full 10 x 10 or bigger, and we had to buy our own hay, grain, ect, thats why.
I like your place though, pretty cool.

Thanks! I've heard enough nightmares about community tack rooms, and tack lockers away from the horse sounds like a pain, and stuff (blankets, etc) end up out in the aisles in front of each stall and my way, it can all go behind a closed door and be tidy :)

WB that is Beautiful! The drawings are so detailed. I have mine all in my head and in pictures we took up there, we only have the outside and the stall part, not the living quarters, the living quarter part is in my head because I'd change it some from how they have theirs, I need a little more space.

I'm going to move to Washington just to board at WB's place!! Love the plan!!! The tack rooms will be a BIG draw. I was at a barn once that had a tack room per stall (wich locks!!) and i LOVED it! Of course the tack rooms weren't right by the stall, they were on the ends and in the middle of the barn. Your's is a very beautiful design! I don't really have a barn, just a run in shed so I won't post! Love looking at everyone else's though!

now now WB....I could bring those "up to date" for ya ;) Actually, those are really good! I've sketched several dream barns...my final project for college was an equine center! 3D tour & all.

Back to topic:
All I have is a tin & steel shed that was originally used for a hog farrowing barn for my boys but it's roomy, easy to clean, & gets them out of the weather so it works! No pics though, sorry. Use your imagination.

I really like everyone else's barns!

We don't even have a full-fledged barn, just a 3-sided run-in shed. But we are down in the south where the weather doesn't get that bad. Our biggest concern is keeping cool, not warm. If I were to need to stall a horse, I can enclose the run-in. And I'm looking at putting up a small portable stall setup for my old pony so that I can feed him and put him up at night during bad weather in the winter because he gets colder than the others.

My husband and I just came in from doing some of the last work on my new feed/tack room. It's inside our shop building, has electricity, hot/cold running water, washer/dryer and will have heat and a/c once we get the vent run.

We are working with a company that builds storage sheds on skids. There really nice all wood, with a porch and everything. We are going to have them build a tack room for me on skids so we can move it if we want too. I'm thinking 12x10 with a 4 foot covered patio would be nice and cute for a tack room so Hubby could get his garage back. Plus, once we go to put in more stalls out back I can move the tack room closer to the stalls if I want, just hook it up to a medium tractor and drag it where I want it.

This is a great barn and something we'd be interested in since there stalls in it. We're thinking of adding 2 stalls to the back of our barn. We can't afford to start from scratch as much as we'd like to but we might be able to figure out how to put 2 stalls in with an addition. We'd love to start from scratch but since that probably can't happen if you look at the Barns Barns Barns site I think it's the 5th barn down on the right, the 2 horse barn, if we added on to the back of our barn we could have a barn that looked similar to that one, with 2 stalls. If we got real creative we could add the other part for the tractor! I'll be lucky to get the stalls though, I'm not sure when it will happen but I hope sooner than later.

I really worry about them out in the ice or if one gets sick so that will be our next project when we can do it. We spent so long on that site last night looking at all the different barns, so many we like.

I LOVE our setup. i havent found very many things wrong with it. You walk in the enterance of the barn which has two sliding metal doors with a regulard door attached to the big door for when the big doors are closed., you have a feed room/ tack room( 12x12 i think). The tack room could be bigger. We have 10 stalls in the front part which have dutch doors attached to the outside which open up into private paddocks.. This front part of the barn opens up into a decent sized riding arena. We have i think 5 stalls attached to the indoor arena, a loong seperate spot for hay storage, a covered overhang with outside access to store a tractor. There is also on the back part of the arena a little spot( we have a tractor there now). the riding arena has sliding doors so we can close off the stall part to keep horses warmer. there are also sliding doors on the back and side of the arena which open up into pastures. We have probably 10 acres divided into 4 pastures, but we leave all the gates open so they roam all the pastures.

You can see the barn enterance and the little door on the big doorVERY CONVIENINT IN WINTER.

Here is the front half of the barn. the wall after the stalls closes shut. the back part is a arena.. you can see the part for a trailer with the blue gate...but we got the tractor in there. each stall has an outlet and light switches for each stall.

We also have heat lamps for the winter. you can see the dutch door on the back part of the stall. I LOVE this feature! this is one of the smaller stalls. We have 2 foaling stalls ( dreamer is in one now, but not in the pic) that are about double this size. i also love the (rusty) metal bar that goes over the top board to prevent cribbing. Dreamer also knows how to open these gates. if it was my barn i would have a solid front stall door because gusts of wind come through the dutch door on really windy days and blow your bedding away( unless we have boards o nthe bottom we made for this)

Dreamer looking in the dutch door. the private paddocks open into pastures.

If it was my barn, i would have made the isle way concrete because dirt is really dusty. put one foaling stall on the front half of the 10 stalls and one on the back half of the 10...and had a slightly larger tack room. ours is just too small. other than that i LOVE our barn!

OH - I never made that connection! OK! I know you! :) I guess I recognize barns better than people!

What ever happened with the odd path around through the palm trees one of your horses was making that you couldn't figure out?

The pasture circles? She still does that. Turns out she is extremely sensitive to bugs. She does fine in the winter or if in a stall, but when left out she is constantly moving and seems to find comfort in patterns. My trainer said she has seen it before. I never had before this pony. She makes all kinds of funny designs. I cover her in bug spray, but she spends a lot of time in a stall during the buggy time of year or she is impossible to keep weight on!
