View Full Version : How are gas prices going?

So the other day oil fell under $90 a barrel for the first time in like six months. It settled at about $89 a barrel, which is just $10 or so higher than last year when gas prices were under $3 a gallon. It is expected to continue to fall as the economy is freaking out.
How are gas prices doing for you all? I'm interested to see how it is around the country.
Here regular is between $3.32 and $3.39 a gallon, and thats down from yesterday and it has been going down every other day at least a cent or two. Diesel is at $3.96 a gallon.

I think the last time I went to town gas was $3.39, but hubby said yesterday on MN news gas was under $3 and expected to fall to around $2.50.
Waiting for that here. Then I'll fill up the Durango which costs an arm and a leg to fill.

*stares* Vick... is that a typo? Gas here is 3.85 for regular (I filled up at Kroger with a kroger card day before yesterday, so I got ten cents off - I was thrilled I only paid 3.75). It would almost be worth it to drive to Missouri from GA to get gas for MORE THAN A DOLLAR CHEAPER a gallon.

Nope, not a typo....sorry.

Wow, under $3 would be great!!
We're getting close here in Ohio, I got it for $3.17 the other day. I think it's down .02 today.

We're paying so much because a lot of states (like SC, which is why they're 30 or 40 cents cheaper up there) don't charge taxes on gas. Georgia gas (until recently) had special additives in most of northern GA (because of Atlanta, they've temporarily taken the requirements for additives out to help with the shortage), and they charge a state fuel tax... AND a state sales tax. THEN local counties and/or cities can charge additional fuel taxes AND additional sales taxes... which almost all do.
It's cheaper in Missouri because the refineries are all on the gulf coast - and they can ship them to the Missouri cheaper than they ship it out here to GA. Diesel in these areas is also cheaper (for the same reason) so the savings on diesel for the tanker trucks is passed on through the sale of the gas. Here diesel is 4.29 or something ridiculious, and that's translating to higher gas prices because the tanker trucks have to fill up and make a profit too!
My Uncle runs one of the pipelines out of Houston (he's worked for both of them, but I think right now he works for Colonial - so you can blame him if it makes you feel better :D), most of the men on my Dad's side of the family have worked in the gas business so I hear these rants *all* the time. It's a terrible snowball effect, and I wish they'd atleast ban local areas from loading on the extra taxes. *rolls eyes* Like that's going to happen.
Edit to add: Right now we're also paying for them to fix and re-start any of the refineries that were damaged. I think they're all back up and running, but those days they weren't able to send any gas out they weren't able to make any cash... so we're paying the employees salaries for lost time. :)

From what I hear. GA, Al and areas where the fuel was not purchased when the prices were so high, are now playing catch up, and some stations even run out of fuel. Why the prices are so high in your areas. So I hear anyways.

I've seen 2.99 the last two days in Ohio.

Saw $3.19 at a station that was $3.55 yesterday. Some stations are out, or so I hear. None in my area. Some are still at $3.69, but then, they always wait till the last minute to lower their prices. It's like they want to squeeze every last penny they can before they drop.

Some stations... our town was out of gas for 5 days... and for 3 weeks anytime any station got gas there would be a line... even at 5:30 in the morning.
The day before yesterday was the first day I haven't seen massive lines at open gas stations for quite awhile. Like I said - Georgia ran out because of the special restrictions in and around the Atlanta area. We couldn't just put normal gas in our vehicles, and normal gas was in abundant supply... which is why they've temporarily taken those regulations off.
Our gas stations are also trying to catch up from sales lost when they didn't have gas. If they didn't have gas - most people didn't stop there for anything (like their morning coffee and candy bar or snacks on a trip or whatever). Basically everyone's trying to recoop their losses.

Some stations...
Sorry, I meant in Alabama. I know that for the Georgia/Alabama game they were asking AL fans to fill up before leaving the state. Same for the 'dega race, fill up before you go.

Yep. "If you're going to Athens, make sure you have enough gas to get back out before you get there." Will's Mom, sister and niece went tailgating. I wasn't correcting you (we posted at the same time), I was kinda snorting at Vick. :D I wish it had been some stations.

I think it is about $3.37 here, I'm hoping it gets under $3 a gallon this winter since I'm trying to lease a horse and would obviously have to drive to see it. The cheaper the better!
alittleoffkey
10-08-2008, 02:25 PM
*sigh* If gas gets under $3 I can see the horses, see Will AND go to SC to see Dandy21 - in the same week even! I don't know if I could handle that much excitement all at once! :D
It's $3.71 for premium gas here in northern Florida, my car says premium only in the manual.

Its about $3.65-$3.70 here at the cheap places...
Good thing when I get my license in March my parents are paying for whatever amount of gas I need. *Sigh of Relief*

WOW. Around my house it's still around $3.85 or higher, from what I saw this morning. However, at my school (an hour west) today, it dropped to $3.3-something and everyone was buying it up. I had just filled up there Monday when it was $3.57. THAT was cheap for me!

I left the house to run errands 3 times yesterday and everytime I went out gas was 10 cents cheaper. The lowest I saw yesterday was $3.23. Its probably cheaper today. However my husband is in Georgia right now and he said gas was still around $3.80 as of yesterday.

It's been falling 5-10 cents a day for the past few days. The Citgo down the streer hit $3.25 today. I would love for it to fall under $3 because I drive home almost every weekend and it takes a full tank to get there and back!

We're below $3.00 now! I never thought I'd live to see the day gas went down to below $3 again! I wonder whats in store for us though....in a few months it will probably jump to $5/gallon...

I live in southern Middle Tennessee - 55 miles SE of Nashville. Gas has never reached more than 3.99/gal - even with Ivan destroying Galveston and shutting the pipeline down that supplies most of our petrol.
Evidently, those of us "down on the farm" didn't panic like some of the city folk did up in Davidson County (Nashville) because we didn't run out of gas -- paid $3.99/gal but we didn't run out until the very last weekend in my county.
We managed to squeak thru until the pipeline got to half capacity and the tankers started delivering again. From that point gas has been steadily dropping in price. I think Friday night it was $3.34/gal and take 3 cents off that at Kroger.
I hear the rumor we should drop to $3.24 this coming week.
That being said, the Co-op was out of red diesel last weekend and didn't know when they would get a tanker in:eek: Sewwwww, we had to buy regular diesel and put an additive in it to run our tractors:(
Isn't it amazing how fuel shortages, and thus the prices, just seem to come and ago "at will" and the Rich Oil Moguls will use any excuse they can to raise prices --- Ivan sure was what the Oil Doctors needed even if it was only for a few weeks:mad:
We moved to Middle Tennessee the third week of September, 2003 from a five year stint in Southern California where waking up in the morning costs money. I CLEARLY remember gas was $1.38/gal. in my county. It has more than doubled in a mere five years:huh:

Littleton, your up near Fort Collins, right? So yeah, not that far. Its kinda dumb if you think about it, does it cost them any more to get gasoline to Fort Collins than it does to Littleton? Probably not, but the stations know they can keep their prices up a little higher up there since Fort Collins is generally well off.
mlle_beau
10-12-2008, 05:31 PM
Yeah it is dumb. Just shows you that gas prices aren't really set at their level out of necessity, just pretty much whatever they think they can get away with. I'm certainly not well off, lol, I'd appreciate it if we had lower prices.

Just had to bump this up. We had a big drop. In this area it is $2.99 now. I stopped at a gas station near the barn that I've never used before and it was $2.85! I decided to wait to fill up until tomarrow since all the stations tend to drop on Mondays since everyone has filled up for the week, so I'm hoping to see $2.80 or lower.
This could be the first time since I got my truck that a fill up will be under $55
