View Full Version : Ummm.. know anything about citing resources?

Gaaah!! Tomorrow I turn this STUPID thing IN! LOL! I can't wait.
I used an article from the internet (CDC article) and it has no authors listed. Here is what I got from the "citation machine" that I'm using. I hate citations. That's why I use a machine. The URL is listed in the citation if it would help to look at it.
If anyone helps out, you have NO IDEA how much it's appreciated! I'm sending you some virtual homemade cookies tomorrow- just let me know which kind. ;)
(2006, May 6). Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Retrieved December 8, 2008, from Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/fasask.htm
So- is that first part my in-text citation? Or is it supposed to stay with it on my resources page? Is this even right/acceptable? :(
OOPS-- I meant citing sources! Not resources! Darn non-changing title edit.. lol.
Here's a link.

There are a bunch of sites on this. I chose one for MLA papers (literature). It would be slightly different for APA (psych).

Thank you so much, Mare.. Actually, I've found several sites as well but the thing with this one is that there are no authors listed on the CDC website where I found this article. I think that's what's throwing me off- and making it look funny to me. :(
edit: And I think that's what's making me think that's my in-text citation, lol. The author's names should be in front of the date, but there aren't any!
Hmmm... I wonder if you can cite, say (CDC 2008), or whatever the year. Sorry, I know my guessing doesn't cut it.
You need JackieB. This is his forte.

Carla, This cite has helped me a lot. Hope it helps some. But as far as citing in the text, I think Mare is right. I think?!?!?!

Mare- you're right! I think. Or that's what I'm doing anyway. I called my friend from school and asked her (makes more sense, right? I just like you people better apparently, lol) and that's what she says she did. So for the author I just have "CDC" and that's exactly my in-text citation: (CDC, 2006).
THANKS A MILLION for caring! LOL!
FoxFire- thanks for the site, I'll check it out as well. :)
I read the article. I can't wrap my brain around all those poor kids, the probs they have and are going to have, and how it's 100% preventable. So sad.
Good luck on the paper.

Yes, it really is sad, Mare. Lots of crazy stuff going on with the poor babies.. I saw a baby born a while back to a mother who had tested positive for meth- WHILE PREGNANT.. :(
I have actually finished the paper, I'm just finishing up the last little touches now. Apparently, some people do this before writing it? LOL

Hi,
I just saw this thread. I think you've got it figured you. The author is the CDC, or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Your citation is correct.

Here's an edited version. My wife just stood over my shoulder and put in all in APA style.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). (2006, May 6). Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Retrieved December 8, 2008, from http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/fasask.htm (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/fasask.htm)
It's apparently not necessary to capitalize the title of the article. And since you already listed CDC as the author, you don't need to repeat that again. She added the (CDC) because you used (CDC, 2006) for your in-page citation.
However, I'm sure that what you already have will be OK with your instructor. You've provided a good citation.

We I think you figured it out but there is a site that will actually cite the sources for you in MLA etc. Its called noodletools.com and you can make a free account. You could use it for future papers etc.

Thanks JackieB, Grunge! The site that FoxFire gave does the citations for you.. I actually did them from it instead of the one I was using. It looked a bit more reliable, lol.
JackieB, I took your wife's advice and used the one you posted. Not far off from what I had ended up with, but I think it looks better than just having "CDC" on there.
Now I'm left with this ONE that I don't like at all:
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (2008, June). Retrieved December 7, 2008, from
http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/brain/fas.html
There is no author listed on the page, etc, but it did have a little info I used (generic stuff- I just needed a 7th source!)
Anyway, I'm about to call it a night on this one. I'll check back in a few minutes- otherwise, I'll just leave it. *sigh*

I'll work a few minutes with the one you just posted and see if I can create a citation.

Here's the whole lot of them. I'm not wanting you to do anything with them... just showing you what I've got. I feel like I'm gonna lose my supper, lol- I'm so stressed!
(repeat) Tomorrow it'll be over for the most part. Tomorrow it'll be over for the most part.

General note to Carla. I'm pretty confident that you do want to italicize the names of books and journal articles, unless you are utilizing a style that you are sure doesn't call for them to be italicized. I'm looking at APA.

Note to Carla - I don't think I should have italicized "Fetal alcohol syndrome" in my other example of the citation below.

Good Lord, it's officially after midnight!
I don't think you should upset yourself about this too much. I mean obviously you want to get it right and be consistent, but you are studying to be a nurse (I think that's what you said), not an editor. I'm sure that a complete citation is more important than any tiny error in adhering exactly to the style.

Yes, double-checked: I do have them italicized.. thanks!
And- don't worry, it's not the editing I'm worried about for nursing- it's the rest of the studying for the test that I ALSO have at 9am! This editing junk just ate up all what was left of my study evening.. I really just need sleep at this point, to calm myself.
LOL.
Just had to get back online because my printer is officially OUT of black ink (on page 3 of printing).. had to email it to my friend to keep from having to go to the library in the morning.. whew!
