Holy crap I've had a rough past couple days. Sorry if its long.
Last weekend Tobey was turned out while his owner was away and did something to his back. He was sore when I went to ride last saturday, so I cut it short (got off as soon as I felt him off) and had him checked by two of the trainers who confirmed his back was sore. One of them (the one in charge of Tobey while his owner was away) had me massage his back with vetrolin. I went back out the next day and checked him again, and the trainer had me massage his back with vetrolin again.
Well, I rode Wednesday and he was great. No problems at all, so I thought he was totally over it. So I finished up cooling him off, got him untacked and the trainer told me to put the vetrolin on again. I did, but I used less than the other times since I figured he was doing well again.
I got a call last night from his owner. She said that his back was swollen a bit and really sore. She said it was probably from too much vetrolin. I was really shocked that this happened, not only because I did it twice before and nothing happened, but I try really hard to do everything perfectly and use extreme caution on everything I do because I lease him and I realize that he is someone elses horse. I really like Tobey, he is an amazing horse and it kills me that I did something that hurt him. I feel really bad about it. But she was able to rinse his back off and hes doing okay now.
He also has a small rub from the saddle so I must've put it on too far back. Again I had no idea because I put it on like any other horse, using the checklist of criteria for a good fit. I never saw the rub and I groom him from head to toe before riding so I can't believe I didn't see it. But obviously It was my bad and I know that.
So anyway the owner wants to meet with me down there just to go over his saddle placement and all. She was really, really nice and not mad at all about any of it. I'm so glad that she understands that I didn't know about the vetrolin and how he would react, and that the rub from the saddle (which I'm assuming must be small if I hadn't seen it yet) was an accident I didn't realize. I'm really happy that she will meet with me and we can go over everything and get it all better.
But yeah, add on top of this that work was really stressful yesterday. We had a really long day at the clinic (several emergencies) and had to euthanize a favorite patient of mine (due to owner negligence and refusal for treatment), as well as the stress of school projects and my dogs doing some bad things, its been really rough.
Oh well, just need to keep truckin' and get through everything.;)
