I have been trying to sell my western saddle for a while now and I finally renewed my ad and put possibly trade for ?? on there. And someone offered me a 1 and half yr old Thoroughbred/Paint filly. Her sire and her dam are registered and she would be able to be double registered if someone wanted to do it. It's very tempting but i'm not sure... I have the saddle for sale for $275 and I know this filly is worth more than that.
This is her sire:

A TB is in the Paint, so you would not own a TB/Paint, you would own a Paint. As far as double registering, what would you register her as???
Id look at her papers on both sides before I made a trade. Sounds kinda fishy that someone would give a registered horse away for a saddle.???? If the horse has not been registered, your gonna pay a high fee. It should of been done as a foal.

Id also check out there sale page and find out why they are willing to give this horse away. The sale prices are HIGH, makes ya wonder about this one. Id not do it.

If you need the money i'd say no but if you have room for another horse and are looking for a new project then go for it.

Agreed with both Ariesgrl and Vicky. Although I dont think its too odd to be trading a foal for a saddle, not around here at least. I can see it happening.

A TB is in the Paint, so you would not own a TB/Paint, you /

I didn't know that ;) I've been calling Biggs a TB/Paint since I got him...although people say he can be considered an Appendix. But because his mom is full TB and dad full paint (a real stocky one at that) I felt the need to add TB to his title and not refer to him as full paint. I don't know much about breed specifications.

As far as should you do it or not I say hey, it's worth a look! I mean, you are already in the market for another horse as I've seen your last couple threads about a few possible prospects. I wouldn't just trade without doing the full inspection you would normally do on a horse to buy. A thorough health check would be in order as well. You don't want another horse sucking money out of you if it's not in good health or the type you're wanting. You know that already

If it looks like the type of horse that could potentially do what you want (hunters is it?) then what better trade! Appendix's (or what I'd call that breed mix) have proven to make great hunters and seem pretty versatile.

The pic shows a cute lil youngin :)

I'd consider it if they're close enough that you can go visit and look IN PERSON.

Sorry everyone I should have made the whole thing clearer, I was kinda writing in a hurry earlier.
The people with her sire are not the people who have her. The people with her have an alot of horses right now and are needing to get rid of some before winter I guess. Her sire and her dam are both from the same place, where the link is. I know of the ranch where they are at and drive by it quite often, they have some nice horses. They originally had the filly's price for $500 but said they would trade straight across. I would go and see her before I decide anything, they are only 45 min away. She said she has been trailered, had her feet done and leads well. She has also had her shots and has never been sick.

Also, I probably wouldn't be registering her because I don't see much a need to... and if I did re-sale her I would just tell the owners all of the information if they wanted to get her registered.

Boy, I would think that it depends on you and what you want. If it is just to sell the saddle...then no...But if you want the foal...and that project and all that goes along with that..then you should absolutely check it out.

Could someone explain about double registering to me? I have a Registered Solid Paint...but he is 3/4 QH and 1/4 Paint...I was told that I could Triple register him. I just don't understand it all and would like to. I don't want to kidnap this thread so you can go to my home page, unless others are interested also. Or should I make another thread about it?

Well if you get the filly and plan to have her as a resale project then I would get the papers cause you will get more for her that way......

If you like the filly and can take on another horse, then go for it.

I think she's cute. I agree with others that trading a horse for a saddle is a bit odd, but whatever works I guess.

The question is, do you really want another horse? You do have Niko and if you're going to be leasing a horse for hunters how much time can you devote to her? If you do want a yearling and are up to the challenge I think it sounds like an awesome trade and she would be loads of fun! I don't think trading a saddle for a horse is uncommon at all. I see a lot of that. The way the market is these days, people don't always have cash to throw around.

Sounds kinda fishy that someone would give a registered horse away for a saddle.????

Thats what i was thinking. Who would give away a registered horse with (apparently) good breeding for a saddle? Unless you could have a vet check the horse, and be able to see it, I wouldn't consider it.

Zoe, if I get her I wouldn't be leasing a horse right now just to be clear ;)

Shy: She isn't registered as of right now

ahuh... hmmm very interesting... maybe thats why. she doesn't want to spend the money getting her registered so she can get a better price of selling her, so she figured she could just give her away for a saddle

I think if you get her it would be well worth it to register. As I recall, it gets progressively more and more expensive the older they get, right? Maybe under 1 is best but 1-2 is not too hard and 3+ gets pretty difficult. Also, as she gets transferred through owners (which hopefully wouldn't happen, but you never know!), if the next ones don't register and so on and so on then eventually she loses value as a "registerable" horse (because it is too difficult and expensive to come up with the registry info!). Then she is basically just a grade horse and sold at grade value (could be more of a dangerous life).
