A Spanish Springs woman who went to a California dog pound looking for pet to replace her own dog that was hit by a car admits she went overboard when she brought home 27 dogs that were facing euthanasia. But she didn't expect to run afoul of the law.

"I didn't realize I was going to be in so much trouble or that so many people would be so angry at what I did," Colleen Spalioni told the Reno Gazette-Journal on Monday. "But after I lost my dog who gave me so much unconditional love, I couldn't leave these dogs to die."

Spalioni said she was trying to find another dog who looked like Barney, her 2-year-old pointer that was struck and killed by a car in November.

Well, I'm glad it all worked out for the dogs in the end but geez! I'm sure we all wish we could save all the homeless animals but it just isn't possible. And you have to wonder about the shelter that let her adopt all those dogs- it seems pretty irresponsible on their end.

Completely irresponsible unless they were trying to get the animals out there - which is still stupid. How could they know they weren't dealing with a hoarder?

They are the ones that should be investigated.

Bless her for saving all those dogs at a kill shelter, it worked out good in the end.

Hoarders simply cannot help themselves. They have wonderful hearts, but no ability to really look at a situation rationally. It wasn't her fault. The shelter should have known what they were dealing with as Chevel mentioned.

I agree with Cheval too.. I do not think the shelters around here would let you adopt that many.

I have a friend that is a hoarder. Makes my just sick at times. Lives in a dump, but makes sure the animals are taken care of first. I dont get it. She is a sweet hearted girl too, but damn, how can one live like that.

I dunno. While I'm surprised the shelter let her take ALL of them, it appears no harm was done here, and she's well on her way to finding homes for all the dogs. She's not a hoarder by lifestyle, she's a good heart who went in to the shelter to find a friend and was quickly overwhelmed by the number of dogs that were about to be put down, that day, every day. It's enough to break your heart.

Anyway... the headline.... I couldn't disagree more. If there's one good thing you can do when you're mourning a pet, it's fill the void with a new heart that needs a home desperately. Just don't do more than you can manage... or than the law allows ;)
