I got a call friday afternoon from the resident farrier at Texas A&M to help run back-up for a bunch of horses yesterday. It was a lot of fun being able to really have a conversation with someone about hoofcare.
I have a open invitation to go hangout at the college and play around in the forge making shoes while he's not working.

It is always fun to do something you love while learning and hanging out with your peers. Good for you!

A small group of farriers in my area and a vet or two get together and have breakfast once a month to shoot the bull and talk about any interesting cases. Usually someone brings radiographs or pictures looking for suggestions or talk about successes or failures in their treatment. It is great networking to build strong business relationships. I call the 'regulars' my circle of trust and that is who I refer people to. I will cover for my circle of trust if one of them is hurt, on vacation, or just plain get out to a client in my area to fix a shoe and such. One of the local vet clinics has their staff call around to remind farriers each month.

Jason want's to organise a hammer-in. We just need a place with enough shelter for us all to get under.

I find that a lot of farriers are a bit shy when it comes to hammering around their peers, me included. Seems that the guys that want to do a hammer in around here want to turn it into a competition instead of a relaxed thing.
A few of us paid to have Danny Ward come in for a weekend. Promoted it, but only a handful of us showed up. How could anyone pass up a weekend with Mr. Ward?

That sounds like a neat opportunity, and a lot of fun!

I don't know, I love playing in the fire. I will take any opportunity I can to turn a shoe or two. Did you see my lat. ext. hinds on the Handmade thread at horseshoes.com?

Oh yeah, he's really knowledgeable, and even more technically minded than I am (no really) which is great.

Sounds like a great day!
Westman - that sounds like fun too, the get-together every month thing. What a nice thing to have a group to talk to about issues.
