WASHINGTON – The number of daily attacks in Iraq has dropped nearly 95 percent since last year, a U.S. military official said yesterday.

Iraq suffered an average of 180 attacks per day this time last year. But over the past week, the average number was 10, Army Brig. Gen. David G. Perkins, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman, said.

“This is a dramatic improvement of safety throughout the country,” Perkins told reporters during a wide-ranging news conference in Baghdad yesterday.

He added that the country’s murder rates have dropped below levels that existed before the start of American operations in Iraq. In November, the ratio was 0.9 per 100,000 people.

Because the news wants to be depressing. That's how they get viewers.

But I must say one of our news stations did mention that last week, briefly.

I think it's the economy, Steve. Everything gets pushed down in favor of news of the economy at the moment. I don't think there is anything more complicated or covert about it. I saw two articles on major "liberal" news networks last week. One was children swimming in Baghdad for the first time in forever, and the second was people playing with their dirt bikes and scooters for the first time in forever. The news report made a big deal about how people finally felt safe enough to come out of their homes. It is good news, though. I'm glad for the soldiers in Iraq and the Iraqi people.

Well, Steve, because it conflicts with the party line the media has been telling us about how Iraq is hopeless.

Part of me hopes that when it's in Obama's lap, they'll want it to succeed, finally. Maybe that's what they're gearing us up for. Obama's easy victory.

But...neither of those stories is military related........and I GUARANTEE you won't see this news on any of the major news (ABC,CBS,NBC)...which is where a MAJORITY of Americans get their news.

I too am VERY glad that Iraq is getting better.... guess Harry Reid was wrong when he said ....Iraq is lost..... :)

"If it bleeds, it leads."

It is that way of thinking that makes the 'feel good' stories and positives so rare in the news today.

Wouldn't surprise me if they surpress this kind of info till Barak gets in office then give him all the credit for it. JMO

Ditto again, though that's really sad.

And Ditto again! I think it's awful they plaster some sad news (like a horrible wreck or something) all over the news but never puts anything good hardly. Goes to show America(well not America, people in America) are obsessed with seeing tragedy and other people's grief, sadness, etc.

OT: But I just figured out how to multiquote.. YAY ME!! Sorry totally random but I'm proud of myself :p

This just popped up on CNN.com, Steve. Up near the very top, too. Not on the other networks, though. But also not on FoxNews.
