What exactly are Trakehner horses? Is it a breed or is it an Arab x TB or something different?? I always thought it was a breed but I was browsing a sport horse breeder's site and keep seeing "Trakehner approved" under some of the horses....just confused. :)

Many of the warmblood breeds will allow certain horses to be bred to a warmblood if it improves the breed. The horse generally has to qualify with an inspection and/or have some form of record. The most common is TB. Cobalts dam is a registered Swedish warmblood but her dam was actually a TB. I would assume that is what they mean...

Trakehners are a warmblood breed. The Trakehner registry may approve some TB or TB cross mares and stallions if, like Mercury said, they will improve the breed. Trakehners in particular seem to hold a little more TB blood than most other warmbloods. They're personally my favorite warmblood breed. Very smart and athletic.

Rare breeds with small gene pools sometimes will try to diversify with selected outcrosses. One example is Lippizaners, who allow outcrosses to approved Andalusians.
Appaloosas too, had an open stud book for awhile, allowing TB, QH and Arabian outcrosses. I think they are closing the door on that now.

My horse Mack is a Trakehner. The nice thing about the warmblood breeds is that mares and Stallions not from the official breed must be approved before they can be used to produce a registered offspring. Unlike the Appaloosa and Paint registries. The babies also have to be approved to be able to breed. It helps keep the breed quality standards high.
However I thought the Trakehner stud book is a closed book. But I just checked with Wikipedia and it says they allow certain lines of TBs and Arabians to cross with registered Trakehners.
And as far as I know you can still breed a registered Appaloosa (that is actually an Appaloosa not NC) to approved breeds like QH, Arabian and Thorougbred. Sonora is from my Appaloosa bred to a QH. She didn't come out with enough breed characteristics to qualify for standard papers but she is registered NC and can be bred to another Appaloosa for a registerable offspring. (not allowed to breed an NC to anything but an Appaloosa though.)

EW's correct, the Trakehner stud book is a closed registry - Arabian and/or TB (approved) are the only other breed crosses allowed. Consequently, the Trakehner is considered the only WB breed - other WB's are largely considered registries due to the crossover from other registries for breeding permitted.
Trakehners tend to carry more "blood" than other WB's which explains their distinctive type (beauty), intelligence, hardiness and athleticism.
EW, what bloodlines does Mack carry?
Outriding, you say they're your favorite WB (mine, too!) :grouphug: - do you currently ride a TK?

Those of you wanting to know more about the breed should visit Trakehners International. The following is an exerpt from that site: http://www.trakehners-international.com/history.html
The origin of the breed is a small horse - bred locally in East Prussia - known as the "Schwaike". The Schwaike was known for its versatility and endurance. When this breed was crossed with imported English thoroughbred and Arabian stallions, the resulting horse was named after the main stud it came from: Trakehnen.

That site was really interesting; thanks. Sad, too.
