View Full Version : Movies OK for kids?

So after seeing people's reaction to Marley, and being scolded :nono: by my brother for taking his daughter with us to "Four Christmases" (oops!)... I want to be sure to NOT rent the wrong thing at the video store tonight. Hailey (my seven year old niece) is coming to spend the night and she LOVES horses and wants to see horse movies - last time we watched "Moondance Alexander" and she loved it. I'm thinking of renting Dreamer and Flicka - they are both in the "kids" section at Blockbuster but I want to be sure there is nothing I should BEWARE of?

Hmmm...Haven't heard anything about Marley - what are they saying?

I believe the two movies you are looking at will be ok for most 7 year olds - but then again, I don't have kids.

Hee, hee - no kids for me either Cat... there in lies the problem, it seems I don't understand the "what's OK for what age" thing.:)

There was a long thread on here a couple of days ago about Marley... people are unhappy that he dies at the end. The commercials do show happy scenes so people who aren't familiar with the book are being blind sided and many kids are leaving bawling. Of course I loved it and had every intention of taking my niece to see it until I saw the reactions!

I BALLED during Flicka! lol. Idk if your kids get upset over things like that but I do! LOL. Just something to consider :)

I'd rent Flicka over Dreamer. Although Flicka made me ball, just like luv2show, its more interesting and easier to get into.

I've never seen Dreamer, so I can't speak intelligently on that one. I LOVE Flicka, but I don't know if it would be a little over a 7 year old's head or not. I can't think of anything bad that's in it though. It's kind of sad in parts, but minimal--if any--swear words, etc. So it should be a safe.:)

What about Spirit? That's definately a kid's movie, but a really good one!:D I love it!:D Black Beauty is great too, but also sad.:(

Which one is Moondance Alexander? Is there a paint horse in it? And is his name something like Patch? I'm not sure if I'm think thinking of the right movie or not....

There was another horse movie I liked to watch when I was a lot younger. I think it was called "Two Bits and Pepper." I don't think it's a real popular movie, but I thought it rocked when I was little.:p I used to rent it (from the kid's section so you're safe in that aspect;)) all the time.

I don't like the new Flicka at all. I say Dreamer all the way! :) It's an amazing story...in fact, I think I want to watch it right now. :)

If not Dreamer then The Saddle Club has some cute movies. Two Bits and Pepper, Misty and National Velvet are some good ones I can find at my Blockbusters.

Edit - and I've never seen it on DVD, but Danny used to be my favorite! :)

Thanks for the ideas and input ladies!

I read Misty when I was little... didn't realize there was a movie. We've watched Spirit (I own that one as well as Black Beauty, Hidalgo and Sea Biscuit) and Moondance Alexander is about a Paint named Checkers - very cute! I'll have to see if there are any Saddle Club movies at Blockbuster... might have to rejoin Netflix.

Ok, that is the one I was thinking of. 'Patches' didn't sound right, but I thought it was something like that. My mom rented that movie for me when I had my wisdom teeth out. I liked it.:)

This isn't a horse movie but you know what movie is really cute? WALL-E - we loved it.

I was going to suggest Moondance Alexander lol. Flicka is a good movie if you arent too picky about your accuracy. I liked Dreamer too. But The Derby Stallion with Zac Efron is one of my favorites. It's fairly accurate and really sweet.

After I watched Moondance Alexander, I decided my next horse is going to be a paint hunter lol.

Oh, yes, Misty is a movie, and a WONDERFUL movie at that. :) I watched it every night when I was little.

Eww I hated Flicka (the remake that is. The original is really cute, though).
I liked the Derby Stallion. I watched it with this kid I babysat over the summer, shes like 9 and she really liked it.
Dreamer is actually one of my favorite horse movies of all time. That and Black Beauty. =]

I didn't like Flicka at all and Dreamer was okay. I really suggest Spirit, and maybe Black Beauty-- Black beauty is sad with a sad/happy ending.

Misty of Chincoteague.. Good book series, terrible movie IMO.

Oh what about the Young Black Stallion? I loved that movie when it first came out. The new Flicka completely stole it's story line. But yeah I like The Young Black Stallion, it's a really good movie for kids.

Black beauty is one of my all time favorite books (EVERYONE should have to read it at least once) :) and I STILL cry every time they bring "Ginger" through the street on the wagon in the movie! UGGGHHHH!! I would cover her little eyes during that part...sniff...sniff.... :(
I would say Spirit, or Wall-E, or maybe Horton Hears a Who (we just watched the last two and they were both cute!!)

You know...makes me wonder how some of us turned out (fairly) normal watching "Old Yellar", or "Where the Red Fern Grows" ??? Hmmmm....

Well we rented Flicka, Dreamer and Derby Stallion and she picked Dreamer to watch first. I forgot what a WONDERFUL movie it was... I loved it all over again, Hailey thought it was "the best" and my hubby (who was just sitting down for a minute then going to watch football in the bedroom) ended up watching the whole thing and cheering along with us!

Tomorrow we'll watch the other two... and I "pre-warned" Hailey about a couple of scary parts in Flicka.

OH - the little girl in Dreamer's name is Cale... I got a kick out of that since when I introduce myself as K-L to people they always say "like the vegetable"? :)

You never know how the kids will react. I showed mine the video."the Snowman." A beautiful story about a little boy who makes a snowman that comes to life. No words only music. Well at the end my oldest one burst into tears because the snowman melts and the little boy lost is friend. She also burst into tears when she watched "The Journey of Nattie Gantz," a Disney movie about a little girl who goes west looking for he father. At the end it looks like they just miss each other and my daughter burst out into tears saying, "She missed her daddy!" She also cried watching nature shows when a predator animal killed a prey animal. Of course now she loves all those awful scary movies you know like the Saw series!

I don't normally watch any animal movies, when I was a kid 100 yrs ago there was a movie called Run Appaloosa Run, I loved that movie, I couldn't have been sad or I wouldn't have liked it since I hate sad. I remember the dog in it leading the horse around. Chances are it's not available anymore. We own Spirit and Hidalgo but I never saw either. I heard part fo Hidalgo and it freaked me out, the sound the horse was making was like my boy when he was dying and I was screaming TURN IT OFF. That's why I don't see animal movies.

I used to love The Young Riders TV series, about the Pony Express. That's out on DVD. I remember watching the first show when my favorite horse got shot, I figured if they killed that horse no way would I watch again but she was fine and went on through the whole series, they had at least 3 horses playing Katie, they didn't match them real good, you could always tell the different horses!

Dreamer was a good movie, appropriate for a young girl..
My stepson has watched Hidalgo, Ruffian, black beauty. And some other movies that he probably shouldn't have seen. Most with his mom but as long as they understand and can handle it and won't have nightmares I see no reason not to let them see them. They have to deal with animals passing away in real life so what's so different about a movie?

I used to rent this every weekend! Loved it!!!!!!!

OH and has anyone ever saw a movie set in like Australia or South Africa? Had horses in it, think it was called " The Rogue Stallion " or something along those lines ? I loved it too, haven't seen it in YEARS!

I LOVE Dreamer. It's an awesome movie and I'd say okay.

We own Spirit and Hidalgo but I never saw either.

I've seen Spirit. It's an awesome movie! I've only seen Hidalgo once, but I didn't really like it.

The Derby Stallion is a good one. What's wrong with Flicka? I've never seen it because I wanted to make sure the horse didn't die before I did.

It's just horrible, IMO. It's a 'modern day' version. Which makes it crappy. I love the old one. :) I could watch it for hours. Plus I don't like Tim McGraw.

Well it doesn't even follow the storyline for the original movie, at all. The girl is just plain annoying. There is no accuracy, at all. Uhh yeah, it's just not a very good movie. The only thing good about it at all was the soundtrack, and the picture quality.

Ohh National Velvet is a good one!

Awww we REALLY liked Flicka! The kids like watching it and so does my husband. I guess because the girl reminds everyone of me when I was younger....just a real spit fire!

If you haven't seen it, rent it and judge for yourself. I liked it and I'm in my 40's.

"Dreamer" is such a good movie, I loved it!

Another one I really like, and my favorite one...."The Black Stallion"....I still get all choked up when they show him running on the beach...and it has a nice ending.

I was just going suggest using kids-in-mind.com for choosing movies. They will give you a heads up about anything bad in movies. My husband and I use it to choose movies for ourselves too. No reason to watch a movie just to be grossed out by some inappropriate content.

Just got done watching Flicka. I didn't see anything wrong with it. Sure it was a little illogical at times (like they didn't ask for ID while signing up for the wild horse race), but it was a pretty good movie regardless.

LOL...I just looked at it like it was a small town and just for fun games! Heck our liquor store never carded anyone in our small town. And our gymkhanas never required a parent to sign for us to ride. But that was YEARS ago....my how things change.

Kindof like how the Black Stallion was allowed to race in what was a Thoroughbred race even though he would have had no papers after just being shipwrecked on some island and was an Arabian for most of the movie. He did have a transformation when he went into the gate... remarkable how that works ;)

LOL yeah. Was that horse a Friesian or a mustang or both? Because in some scenes (like the beginning when she first meets Flicka) I swear that horse looks like a Friesian, but in others (like when they first put Flicka into the roundpen) it looks more like a mustang or lighter horse breed. I never got a good enough look at its legs though in the beginning and that's usually how I tell Friesians if I can't figure it out on body alone.
