Does black tack 'bleed' dye? I ask cuz I got a set of (Weaver) black bridle/reins and breastcollar for xmas. But, if I use it with a light colored saddle, will the breastcollar tugs stain the saddle? Will the leather make dark stains on a light colored horse? Never had black western tack before, any help is appreciated :)

It shouldn't bleed color at all if it's good tack.

I agree. My black saddle doesn't stain my clothes or pads.

Nope.. as far as I know it wont bleed-- my black tack never has.
My husband has black tack for a grey horse and has used a white "ice" pad before and none of it bleeds.

Only time I've seen tack "bleed" color is if you use the wrong kind of cleaner on the leather and you loosen it from the saddle.
All I use to clean black tack is Murphy's Oil Soap, diluted in water. More aggresive cleaners will clean the color right out if the leather, and act like a pencil eraser. You rub the color out, but it's left sitting on the surface. If you don't clean the eraser pieces off before you go back to writing then you might make a bit of a mess. Same thing with your tack, if you don't let the tack dry and brush off the residue before oiling, you will have all this black "dust" that just turns to black paste when you oil the tack. Good cleaners won't strip the dye from the leather though, and will make your tack last longer.
My 2 cents.

Thanks for the tip Walkin! :)
An old cheap black saddle of mine used to bleed no matter what. It didn't matter if I was cleaning it with saddle soap or conditioner. I don't think your tack will bleed.
The rest of my black tack has held up really well.

I had a black Weaver western headstall and right on the tag it says that it will bleed...don't remember the exact words, but I might be able to find something online...

Not too sure, but I guess with the process Weaver uses to dye their black leather they say it can bleed...? I really don't know, I bought the headstall over a year ago. =/

Keep in mind too, that if you over oil your tack, it excess oil will collect dirt and leave "grease stains" on whatever it touches. It doesn't matter what color you tack is, it has the capability to do that. More regular cleanings and more judicious use of oil / conditioner might help.
