Tonight I finally got to get out to the horses and go for a ride. I decided I would ride Norman tonight since I hadn't ridden him since we bought him (over 5 months ago) because he's "hubby's horse".

Well I get out there and Booty comes up to me, so I thought okay, I'll ride her instead, we've been doing good.

I groom her, and then hop on bareback again. She was HORRIBLE!!!!!! She refused to budge. No matter what I tried she would not go. I finally tapped her with the lead rope I had with me on the butt and she moved a few steps, but she just kept turning and not listening. I worked with her for about 20 min and just got super frustrated. So we ended on a good note of her listening to me and then I got off.

Norman was right there, so I grabbed him, groomed him and hopped on him! :cowboy: He did okay at the beginning, but then we would get too far from Booty (he has major attachment issues with her) and she wasn't following him, so he wouldn't budge. More frustration, etc. Finally got him to do some nice turns for me and some backing up... and then he listened for a bit. We did some trotting and some more turning and he was good. Then he was lazy and wouldn't budge again. :nono: I worked with him for about 30 min and got him moving, we did two nice straight lines with some trotting and then I hopped off.

AH!!!!!!! It was so frustrating to not be able to get them to go anywhere! I know it's probably because they haven't been ridden consistently this summer, but when we ride them together they do great. It's when it's just one of us that we have issues.

Oh, and after I got off Norman I spent some time combing his mane and really giving him a nice after ride grooming session and he FINALLY relaxed enough for him to drop. He's NEVER done this for me. Well it seems to me his sheath needs cleaning. SO that is on the list tomorrow. Hubby and I are going to try to do it ourselves... but if he doesn't drop or it doesn't work, I will be calling the vet to have him come out next week. He seems okay with me touching it, but I wasn't prepared in the middle of the pasture with anything to clean him when he dropped for me.

So that was my night. It was really good to ride him again though. :)

I know exactly how you feel! Sometimes they just have those days when they just WON'T listen. Ickabod has that day any day I ride him, lol. Have fun with the cleaning, lol

I'm also glad you didn't fall off. It can be a challenge some days, that's for sure!

Have fun with the sheath cleaning- maybe that's why I have a mare, he,he! Though I've heard sonmetimes their udders need cleaning, I've gotten lucky with Gypsy!

As far as your ride- you're right, you didn't fall off, and it sounds like you ended on a positive note. Just must have been one of those days!

Might want to consider a vet for the sheath cleaning just to get that nasty ole bean out - that's the toughest part, IMO! :)

Sounds like you did just right on your ride - end on a good note, keep pushing for even the slightest response, not fall off... frustrating, I'm sure, but some days are just like that!
