I'm going to start my horse on ground driving...I was just going to use long reins, a training surcingle, and then I can't decide between a side pull or headstall and bit, and if a bit what kind of bit...He is currently in a billy allen type mouth piece.

I start out with a halter or sidepull. Once they understand what's going on, I switch to a snaffle bit. I never ground drive in any kind of curb bit.

I've never used a sidepull, mostly because I don't own one, but they would work well for driving!
I use a halter at first, work up to a snaffle.
I think a web halter does work best, better than a rope halter, just for the ability to give a better side pressure using the side rings.

I start with a snaffle but I do a lot of other things with the bit before I start driving. If the horse has never carried a bit, I would go with a sidepull. A halter is kind of like trying to adjust your stirrups with thick gloves on.
