Friend of mine is bringing her mare over for me to horse sit......she bought this mare a finished 2D barrel horse for 150 and the next day she coliced; a week and 900 dollars later she is bringing the mare home and remembers she has a out of state wedding to attend so she is bringing me the mare........till she gets back.......she said she is giving me 38.00 worth of feed? I dunno........I don't think I am going to use it because she said it was a senior feed and I don't feed senior.........or she said the mare is on senior and has another type of feed..............I dunno, I'll update later.......with pics LOL.....

hummmmm okay....

The mare coliced the day after she brought her home and took her to a vet in Waller, TX. She picked the mare up today and called me on her way home to ask if I could watch her mare and feed her while she is in this out of state wedding. She is giving me 38.00 dollars worth of feed to compensation.....don't know what kind of feed just yet but I doubt I will use it........

So the situation is that she's going to bring you this potentially colicky horse no one knows very well and then leave town.... and she's paying you with $38 worth of feed you don't use. Have I got that right?

pretty much...........I don't mind watching the horse........just the last minute thing annoys me.

Well, there's not much about the deal that seems good... for you anyway ;). I hope she has a nice time at the wedding. :)

And of course, I hope you have no trouble with the horse.

And... nothing wrong with Senior feed. Mix it with whatever you normally feed. It's good stuff.

Good luck Liva.. Hope she doesn't try to hold you responsible if something goes wrong. Doesn't seem like an amazing deal on your end.

Well the mare is here and the first thing she did was start grazing......She pasted stool and a large amount of gas.......I led her to where the water is and she had a good drink. She seems in good spirits and is an attention bug...........I am embarrassed to post pics of this mare......but it isn't because my friends neglect.....the vet said that this mares uterus and vagina was so messed up and her weight got down so bad that her anus was sunken in and that every time she would defecate some would go into her vagina. Poor girl........I don't even know her name......forgot to ask

Oh wow! Poor thing.. she's beautiful. I'm glad she's safe with you for now. And I hope she'll improve greatly with your friend taking care of her, too. :)

I'm guessing the vaginal/uterine issues were from breeding/overbreeding? :(

I didn't understand any of that but it didn't sound good. She has great potential though. Good luck with her.

Make sure you keep her quarantined from any other horses!!!! Please!!

I can't emphasize this enough - a hard lesson learned by yours truly in a similar situation a couple years ago. Ex-friend bought 2 horses and didn't have her place ready to keep them. I let her keep them at my place "just for a little while" and ended up with some $3500 of vet bills and all 4 of my horses ill (one coming very close to dying and spending several days at the vet's office). It's not something I've ever worried about before, and BOY did I learn my lesson! Unless it is a horse that you know a lot about, I would QUARANTINE! No nose touching, even. Her horses weren't in with mine or anything, and looked perfectly healthy at the start.

Poor girl - she looks pretty happy, though!

Aw, I sure hope she gains some weight with you taking care of her. She did get that issue fixed right?

livaward

Yes she is quarantined from mine........Before the mare got her I put mine in another pasture with a lane in the middle so there isn't even a shared fence......yes the issue was taken care of.....the vet sewed her up is what the owner said............I have no worries that she will try to pen anything on me if something was to happen I have known her for years and is there when you need her and is a good hearted person.

Aww, poor mare. I hope your friend can get her back to health. Sterling was caslicked for many years (sewn up) just for barrel racing. (stops wind sucking) Is your friend going to breed or race this mare? Or just care for her? Good luck with her and you are a great friend!!! Big pat on the back from me!

She looks like a nice mare. Let's hope her breeding days are over.
One of my mares had exploratory colic surgery (lipoma) & looked really thin when she came home but bounced back quickly. I'm sure this mare will too.
It's very nice of you to do this for your friend & the mare.

Aww bless her, poor girl. What a sweet face. Well I guess your friend trusted you with her. And for the senior feed, thats great for most any age. I mixed it with Dollys feed.

Good luck...you will need it. I would be afraid the mare would colic again....at least get her to sign something giving you the right to call the vet if something happens and she is responsible for the bill. You are a good friend to do this and that woman is quite irresponsible.

Poor girl, she's a beautiful horsie though. You'll definetly have to get pics when she's got her filled out. How old is she if you don't mind me asking?

Well if she loves attention then she's probably just happy to be where people are taking care of her.. Poor thing. Good job to you for volunteering to look after her. Well not volunteering exactly....lol.

While I'm here, how's Ms Pearl doing with the trainer? WE do need pics on a regular basis you know.... ;) :innocent:

Just thinking. If the mare was under nourished when your friend got her, possibly her colic was brought on by feeding too much too soon. I hope you got her feeding instructions from her vet.

I once took in a friend's horse that needed stall rest & hand walking as she only had 24/7 turnout at her place. This mare HAD to come with her companion gelding. They could not be separated. One needed to lose weight, one needed to gain. Good times!
They stayed a whole winter. All turned out fine & my friend owes me favors for life.

Well the mare is doing great this morning......talked to me. No more babies for this girl.....I really don't know much about her so I don't know how old she is. I did get the vet paper for feeding and other things. My friend just plans to trailride her since her old gelding was put to sleep and she can't stand not to have a horse in her life so she will be well taken care of.

Steve you pass her house when you come here at that 4 way little blue house on the right.......and you are more then welcome to bring some clyds out as long as I can claim them as mine LOL.....
