Do you like the new pictures scrolling by at the top of the forum?
It can either be new pictures or random pictures, from albums you set to Public. I think it has some appeal.
You can click on them and even make comments on the pictures, if you like.
If you don't want your pictures to appear, you could set them to private, but we've learned that if you set your pictures to private, only your friends can see them when you post them on threads, which isn't so good.
TIP: If you don't want to see it you can click the arrow on the right side of it's title bar and collapse it.

I like it.. a lot. Are they just pictures from random people's albums?

That's how it's set now... to show random pictures from public albums.
It can be set to scroll all the new ones as they're added, but I kinda like the random!

Just FYI, it's not ~exactly~ the same add-on that hgs uses, so it does not yet have the feature that allows you to also upload and post the pictures from the reply window.
We looked at that add-on, but it costs money, about $80. This one is a freebie we thought we'd check out first.

Dang, I dont see them.lol
But if you got pics of our albums scrolling, I think thats cool.
Now to go find the right button to see it...lol

I like it! I was pleasantly surprised when I got on this morning.
Can it be set to show up (if you want it to) on every page instead of just the main one?
WashingtonBay

I dunno 42 :) Good question. Hubby would know, but he's browsing for yet more cool stuff.
Not positive I'd want it to but we'd have to see.

Can it be set to show up (if you want it to) on every page instead of just the main one?No, not with this add-on. If we do end up upgrading to the other paid add-on, it may have the capability of doing that, but I haven't looked into it enough to know.

TIP: If you don't want to see it you can click the arrow on the right side of it's title bar and collapse it.
And not just the pictures, but other sections as well - each forum category, who's online, forum stats, etc. Just look for the http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/images/styles/beige/buttons/collapse_tcat.gif over on the right. Click it to collapse the section, click it again to un-collapse it.

Very cool, it put a smile on my face to see the pictures. It doesn't scroll for me but I can refresh and see new pic's come up. Is there something I need to do in my forum settings for the pic's to scroll? Anyway, very cool!!!
Great job!!!
Sincerely, Stacy

No... you're right... scrolling wasn't really the right description - it updates when you refresh.

Pretty spiffy! I like it this way, really. When you start putting up new pics as they're posted, you never know what's going to pop up- like wound pics for instance.

Well isn't that neat! This forum is so nicely set up and pretty easy to get around on. The less 'intimidated' I feel with this computer stuff, the more I learn. It blows me away all the things you can do with them. WB & WB - how long have you two been savvy with computers? Do you use them at work?

Yeah - I mean the good part about them showing up as they're posted is that it sometimes makes you wonder "ooh - what's that about?" and go find the thread they're being posted on. But sometimes it also means you have to look at 20 pictures of horse feet going by.
I like the random! It makes us more and more familiar with each other to see the pictures we might not normally see unless we actually went through everyone's albums individually.
And it's something that makes this forum a little different and unique... not just copying what hgs does.:)

I totally love the feature, it brings people to your albums for a further look and it's always fun to start the day with pics!

I LOVE this feature - I've had so much fun sitting here hitting "refresh" and looking at all the photos! It is a great way to see what everyone's got in their albums and click to comment if you feel so inclined... like I said - LOVE IT!

Great - Sounds like this feature was a big hit.

Yikes - why are these up for public viewing today? I was able to see the pics before logging in so I went to my profile and was able to see my photo albums too... I don't like that so much.
WashingtonBay
10-12-2008, 09:34 AM
The photos... they ought to be public don't you think? - I mean, if the album is set to public.
You want them to only appear when people are logged in? That would apply to all pictures appearing even in threads they post them on. That's not so good.
Let me know your thoughts on it.
SedonaThunder

I don't like non-members being able to look at my photo albums. I guess just about anyone can register but then it seems like you at least know something about them... even if it is only their IP address. Let me know if they are staying public and I'll go in and change mine.
I think what happens on the Fugly blog is a good example as to why some are leary for non-members to see photos. They pull them from anywhere and tear the horse apart. I had a photo of Apache when he was a foal up at one place and he got pulled into the forums and got tore apart. So much for just targeting bad breeders - he was a rescue.

There's only three settings for albums, and they're the ones you see too, when you're making the album.
Public - everyone can see
Private - visible only to your friends and contacts and the admins
Profile - for your profile image backgrounds and things.
There are settings for whether people have to be registered or logged in to view profiles or albums at all, and we can set that so they can't, but it's unclear to me whether posted images would continue to show up in threads, we'd have to check that.
I guess my feeling on it is the scroll and the pictures might be something that would attract new people to want to register and participate. We probably shouldn't put anything in there we don't want the public to see.

Cat I know that's a real concern... I'm not a fan of fugly AT ALL.
Unrelated to horses, I've been through the experience of having my wedding pictures I posted on another site laughed at and mocked by people at an opposing political site. It's not fun.
But I've come around to the conclusion that while we may think these places feel like private clubs, they never really are, they're public, and we shouldn't write anything or post anything that we wouldn't want out in public. If we behave that way all the time, then we have less chance of getting burned. I think making them private to only members may feel more secure, but that feeling of security is a false security.
Keep discussing.

Now, we may be able to make it so if any of our pictures get hotlinked to fugly, they get replaced by an obscene message detailing our deepest most heartfelt feelings about fugly and what they do.
That won't help us if they save the pics and host them themselves, but it would be a fun way to slap the lazy. :)
Ooo - now that could be fun. I could handle something like that.

So did you change something over night? Yesterday I couldn't see the pics scrolling until after I logged in.
WashingtonBay
10-12-2008, 10:26 AM
Yes - we did change that, as we were continuing to tweak it. We hadn't really intended for it to be set ~not~ to display.

I'm getting a little sad about the scrolling pics page, now - every time I go see it (and I tend to hop to the main page periodically just to see them!) I am reminded that I need to put up more photos. I've only seen one of mine so far! Sniff, sniff.... maybe I'll post random album pics just to have a bigger # come up! Woohoo!
I really do like seeing them, though - like quick glimpses into people's lives.

A question:) When someone leaves a comment on a picture, if the album owner returns a reply does the commenter get a notification?
WashingtonBay
10-14-2008, 08:40 AM
No they don't get a notification - not unless we check back.
See, hubby just did on yours, and we saw that you were wondering if you should leave the comments after they've been read, and you should! -If they're pleasant comments that is. So we put yours back. :)

The album just has to be set to 'public' which it looks like yours is. I've seen your pictures come up :)
Of course, the more pictures people have loaded, the better their chances of winning... it's like a raffle. :D
