I have been trying to find a new home for Dreamer, since we can't ride her. She is only 8 yrs old and we had talked about several different things.

The last would have been to put her down if we couldn't find the right home for her.

I had several people contact me about her, but only to find out they were horse traders or people that would have taken her to auction.

I have been talking with a lady who will take her in and will breed her if we want and we can have the foal. We have talked about raising a baby, but we are not set up for housing a mare in foal and this lady is. So we are going to visit her this week. She has sent us pictures of her place, but we are going to go see everything in person.

We know Dreamer would make a good broodmare. She puts out really pretty babies. So we just have to decide by Spring if we want to have a foal. Maybe in a year and a half we will have our own property. Either way, I'm pretty confident this lady will give Dreamer a great home.

Yeah...I have several years of Contract Law under my belt, so everything will be in writing. Plus she doesn't get Dreamers papers till the first foal hits the ground.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, but I have been talking with this lady for the past month. She just wants Dreamer to have a good home....and that's what we want to.

I really hope this all works out and you are lucky to have found such a great person as she seems to be. I happy that it is such good news for you and especially Dreamer.

Sounds good for her... but let me inject one BUT.

Have you talked with the vet about her condition and learned what to expect about her passing on a tendency for Navicular to her babies?

I would certainly make sure if you do breed her, that you pick an older stallion with a lifetime of sound athletic achievement and nice big healthy feet, to increase your odds of getting a baby who is better than her momma. I think that should be the goal in any breeding program. And I think picking a young or unproven stallion, or one with little tiny halter feet, would end in heartbreak.

I agree WB.... We...the vets and shoer and I believe that Dreamers issues have come from very poor hoof and health care in the past. Of course we could be wrong, but knowing where she came from and seeing how she was taken care of, all signs point to neglect. The previous owner before us had her for 3 years.

Like I said, we have until Spring to decide if we are going to do anything with breeding. If not, at least she will have a good home. :)

Not to be the downer here but have you also talked to your vet about what the extra weight of carrying a foal will do to her lameness issues? I have known many pregnant foundered mares and they were miserable while pregnant. Adding that extra weight really didn't help their condition. That would be my concern.

I hope it works out for you! I also think it would be good to talk it over with your vet to see if she is sound enough to carry the weight of foal. Good luck! :)

Well the good part is that her vet is the same vet that diagnosed Dreamer, so everything will be run by them. I was shocked when she told me the name of the vet she used. And I never told her who diagnosed Dreamer in the first place.
