So this spring and summer I want to work Ben over some poles and small jumps. Does anyone know any place I can buy a small set of ground poles and maybe some jump standards? I have been looking around online but they are all so expensive. Also, if I decide to get my own poles do I just get wood poles? I would prefer wood because I know pvc is very light, and can be dangerous if broken. Any advice would be great

I have PVC poles that are heavy, I have to drag them around most of the time lol. I can pick them up its just a pain. As for standards, my dad made me two. He even made the jump cups, which are just as good as the real ones, pins and all. I know that jump standards to buy are really spendy, if you can find someone to make them and maybe just buy the cups then that is a good way to go.

wow cool that he made all of that... im not sure if I am that talented though. For now I think im just going to get the poles first because I can do ground pole work, and make my own contraptions if I want to make them higher :p new smilies!!

Yah cavaletti's are pretty easy to make also and you can change them to 3 different heights just by flipping it over.

Personally, I don't like wood poles. They can also be just a dangerous if they broke, or if the horse isn't wearing good enough leg protection, it can hurt them.

For schooling I made my own! :D You can go to a carpet factory and get a cardboard tube. You can tape different colours of tape on it, etc.... and most of the time they'll give them to you for free!! They're light, inexpensive and they wont break easily. I believe I had a post on them before, but I'll post a pic :)

luv that picture of your dog jumping is adorable!!

as for the jumps, I would say what luv said sounds like a good idea, my trainer did something similar, except she used plastic pipe like poles. they actually came out very nice!

For trot rail you can get "yard timbers" at any Home Depot or Lowes they have rounded edges and are heavy.
You want them to be heavy so if they kick them they stay put.
They PVC ones can be ok if you put a 2x4 in them to weight them down, but I really perfer the wood ones so they don't more.

thanks everyone .. I was thinking of getting these, but do you think I could arrange the blocks so they could be used kind of like standards if I want to make some small crosspoles ?

****nevermind, I just read that the jumps arent included. A lot of the sets im seeing dont include the poles.. which is very annoying!!***

I have some heavy pvc poles and have never had a problem. If you want to make them heavier so they don't fly around you could fill them with sand and cap them too. My husband made me a couple of standard sets.

Just wondering, but about how much money did you spend? I'm looking into getting some too. :)

You can find poles at home depot, or any big hardware store with lumber. I have used PVC pipes, but they can be flimsy and break. For low jump standards you can use cement blocks, you can make your own, or, my favorite, you can get barrels; then you can even adjust the height from a low cross rail to a three foot vertical...

I think 8 foot treated round posts at a farm supply are even cheaper than PVC.

My mom made me 2 seperate jumps for Pandora out of PVC. It's a heavier type PVC, not flimsy. She put two different heights on it. I can get some pics for you if you'd like.

You could have those that are in the pic with cinder blocks and landscape timbers. My jump stackers are posted around her on a thread.

You could make jump standards really easily, theres tons of info on the web on how to make them. We've got some at our barn that were home-made back when the barn first opened years and years ago and they are still holding up.

They're basically just a square pole with holes drilled every 3 inches for jump cups, and a couple of pieces of wood nailed to either side of the bottom to support them.

Otherwise if you look to buy online, you can expect a pretty big price tag and shipping surcharges.

well we have just been using pvc pipes with some dirt in them.. they weigh down pretty nicely. then when we want to raise them we use buckets and stuff, we arent going very high yet, so its working well!

How high would you be jumping and would you be coursing?

I suggest that for little courses/little jumping - but, you can stack them on top of eachother to make them bigger! I used those at my old barn; they're light weight & safe.
