Well, if you suspect there is something like that wrong, I'd call a vet. Do you see any sign of being sore around the head, wounds, swelling, trouble eating?

Sounds like a teeth issue. Almost everytime a horse has had teeth issues around our barn they do the exact same thing with the mouth open and stretching. It may be there are a couple of hooks that have formed that are bothering him.

Or maybe it's the bit. Horses don't always stay with the same bits for their entire life. After doing the teeth check, maybe try out a differnt bit or bitless.

In addition to what WB said, my gelding had a bee sting in the corner of his mouth, almost inside it. I didn't know this, but he was totally resistant to being bridled and I shortly after found the swelling. I would have a vet out. :)

Because of the hostory you've given us, I agree with everyone else- your horse really needs to be seen by a vet- there are too many different possibilities here.

To add to what has been already said, bristlegrass. Small burrs in hay that can embed themselves into lips & be very painful. It happened with my horses, twice. Good luck.

I'd check his mouth to see if you could find anything that could be bothering him. if you can't find anything, then have the vet out. Good luck! :)

When was the last time he had his teeth done?

sounds like a teeth issue. I dealt with the same thing, turned out she had some significant hooks even though she had had her teeth done 6 mos prior. I had her lightly sedated last time so the "dentist" could get in there and do a really thorough job. ...worked wonders!

It could be a wolf teeth issue. They come in around 2 I believe and will often cause pain with a bit. *wolf teeth are sharp lil things that are directly in front of the first molar. Not to be confused with Canines, which come in later and are midway between the incisors and the molars. ;)

A horse is like a toddler with a death wish. If they can get injured, they will find that one nail on the fence, that 1 inch piece of twine in the hay, that one sharp tree branch....anything's possible. I also would feel around his mouth and jaw and if I didn't find anything I'd have the vet out (or take him to the vet in my case). If that isn't an option for you, give him a few days to rest and see if he's better. If he's not, you probably have a problem that wasn't a kick or some other minor injury.

Update:
I bought a new bit. I got a bigger size and nice brand eggbutt and this one is designed a little differently and it's great. This new bit was costly but it's worth every penny. I think the other bit pinched him.
