Well, I'm just back from the vet's facility. My daughter rode Al and he was fine all flat, no jumping and as soon as she went to untack him he started turning to look at his tummy and was standing funny and when she put him in his stall to finish grooming he wanted to go down. Classic signs for Al. She called me and I called the vet. They were all out on calls and the closest one to us would be able to get there in 2-3 hours. So we elected to take him to the facility which cut the time in half. The BO gave him 10 cc's of banamine for the trip. He pooped in his stall, the trailer and at the facility. Doc did the exam and there was no impaction so she suspected gas and when she passed the tube gas was released. She went ahead and oiled him and gave him electrolytes. While he was there we had her take a look at the cut from the other day as well as a new on on the other rear leg. An hour passed and sedation and banamine had worn off and he seemed fine so we brought him home. No food tonight except for a tiny mash to get some meds down and if all goes well tonight a very small soupy breakfast in the morning before turnout.
She said she had treated 4 colics today all impactions and was back to gear up for call backs later this afternoon and maybe evening.
I sure hope my turn is OVER!!! Watch your horses everybody.

Interesting... so the gas was in the stomach and came out the tube?
I'll remain hopeful that your turn is OVER and he stays fine.

Thats great when they pass alot of gas, so much relief for them, when it is gas colic that is.
Glad your vet tubed for the just in case.
I hope things will only get better.

Yeah, I think there was more gas in his system, but some of it was released with the tubing. My daughter will go up tonight around 8:30 and give him his meds and some turns around the arena.

City gets gassy sometimes. I take him for a walk around the neighborhood. He gets all sassy when we do this, so I know he will release it.
Would something like that work for you?

Ya know Vicklynn, with his history of colic and the surgery in Jan '07 I don't take any chance. When he shows the signs I call the vet so treatment can get started. Another surgery is not in the cards so catching and treating it early is the key for him. His other episodes including the one that required surgery were impactions but I think with the 3 smaller soupy senior feed meals a day we have kept that from happening again. Our weather is not co-operating either- cold as all get out Mon,Tues, Wed, then warm as spring on Thrus, cloudy and cooler on Fri and back to cold as all get out today with more of the same for the next couple of days.
My daughter will walk him around the arena tonight and make sure he has warm water before she leaves.

Well thats no good then. I see why you call the vet ASAP. I hope he is better in the AM.
Guess who was gassy when I went out to feed? Had that hollow tinkly gurgle on one side. Took him for a walk, had him in the arena, got a great poo. Made him a sweet/salty very wet hot mash, he lapped it all up. Had 6 poos sence this morning, so he will be fine. Just ate to much hay this morning. He really is an easy keeper and to much hay dosnt sit well with him.

Yikes...seems like we've had more colics than usual. I am so thankful none of mine have ever colicked yet but I always keep an eye out for any odd behavior. I'm glad he seems like he'll be fine but I'm sure it didn't help YOUR nerves lol;)

We went up last night and he seemed fine. Wrapped his leg cuts so he could go out and not get them dirty today and made sure his water was warm. He had a gigantic pee spot in his stall from all the water the vet pumped ito him, and left written feeding and turnout instructions to reinforce the verbal ones. And boy was it ever frigid up there! He must have been back to himself as there were no phone calls this morning which is a good sign. My daughter will be up there today to check on him. Thanks for all you thoughts and prayers. And watch your horses!!
