Well, every few months. On May 20, 2006, mid afternoon we had a beautiful chestnut colt born. TE Gold Eagle aka Slick when he entered this world.

By the time he was six months old, Slick was a dark chestnut. And not real attractive.

When he was a year old, he developed a blood spot on his side, still a dark chestnut but with some parts of his body a bright chestnut and beginning to roan. And he seemed to get less attractive daily. My poor Slick, about all he had to recommend him was his wonderful personality.

Then this spring, he suddenly turned into a varnish roan with black dapples and black spots over his rump. He still had the blood spot but it was fading or roaning a bit and still had some chestnut color on his legs. He lost most of his mane when he did this too. Almost overnight he turned into a unusual and rather attractive horse. Still with the great personality.

Now, several months later, my baby is all grown up and he's a blue roan. And a really good looking horse IMHO. His front legs are still chestnut.

He will always actually be a chestnut but it sure is fun to what the color changes and speculate what he will look like six months down the road. It's like having a new horse two or three times a year.

That's pretty crazy how he keeps changing! He's a beautiful guy though. It would be like having a new horse all the time!

Huh! Interesting indeed! I think it would be fairly tough to predict at this point what he's going to shed out to in the spring!

It sure is fun to watch and it's interesting never knowing what he'll look like the next time I go out to the barn. And people inquiring on him to purchase must think I'm nuts. I'll advertise him as a chestnut and send them pictures of a roan. Then advertise as a varnish roan and people come out and see a blue roan. The only thing that stays consistant except for his personality is his blaze and his stockings.

That's got to be the craziest color change I've ever seen. That particular season in his life when he had the dappling is probably the most unique color I've ever seen! Very pretty horse :)

Thanks everyone :) After 30 years of raising appaloosas I thought I'd seen it all until Slick. Looking forward to spring and maybe another change.

I need to take some more pics of Nevada, the pics I have posted are all his sale ones which were taken in May...even in the last two weeks I have noticed more and more roaning coming through....He is actually mostly a strawberry colur now with bright Bay and black legs.... it's great I have no idea what I am going to end up with. And of course no idea of which colour tack to buy!! Appy people at what age do they finally stop changing (for a while) or do they really change each season?
Yours is a beautiful boy but I so get you about the ugly duckling stage Vardi is currently sporting an enourmous sized head, and huge feet both of which he needs to grow into!....my other half refers to him as the spotty yoof!

Boy, I don't have an answer to that. Some never change, some change with the seasons, some change for no visible reason at all.
Vardi will end up beautiful - isn't it amazing how they can go from beautiful to ugly and then back to beautiful with their growth spurts.
