View Full Version : The challenge....

Ok, so at the barn there are lots of different training styles. Someone uses clicker, I use CA, another person uses CC, someone uses Parelli and of course none of us even entertain the though of using one of the others...So there was a challenge.

Four note cards: Parelli, CA, Clicker, CC

They were turned over and the four of us drew a card.....

Lemme guess ... you got the Parelli card?

Palogal

Why yes, yes I did. I'm going to do it though. I haven't done Parelli in years but I think if you do any method and you do it right it will work. I also think that in order to use a certain method you have to think and not do the things that are ridiculous. So, I'm going to Parelli one of my mares.

ETA: I'll be borrowing the DVD's since I haven't seen them in a while and buying a "training stick" off of ebay...but I'm not getting orange.

I know you will do fine. Sort of funny you got Parelli though! From what I have seen if a person knows what they are doing and they do Parelli they have success. The lady who trained my horse is great and she uses nothing but Parelli right now. She's a wonder, she has Parelli down and the horses respond to it and it's like magic to watch, actually way better than watching a DVD. When I need a refresher about my horse I get the video out that we took of her training and leave the couple Parelli things I have in the box. She had experience before she ever heard of the man or the techniques and that's the difference.

The people who have issues are people [Like Me] who have no clue what they are doing and try to take an untrained horse and learn from DVDs. Some might have success but from what I've seen from my friend and the people who have spent $1,500 on DVDs and are terrified of their horses [To be fair it's not only Parelli it's other trainers too where the person who just tried DVDs with no other experience] after trying their ways. They didn't understand what they were being taught, they don't understand the horse's mind. It doesn't work for them and they end up spending a ton of money and have a horse that is confused and crazy. They then bring that crazy horse to my friend, she uses her ways with a little of this or that thrown in, fixes and makes a horse I can ride when she's done. If I can ride it then it's good since I'm not a very good rider. I'm sure if she followed a DVD she'd do fine with it because she knows what she's doing to begin with so I have every faith that you will do perfectly fine and will maybe have some fun.

My boys love the games with the balls but our mare hates the balls, asking her to play with them is like asking her to do some major thing!!!!!!

Good Luck!

At least it wasn't clicker training...I think that would be hard.

I was hoping for CC since he and CA are so similar. Oh well, guess I better start on my friendly game when I can get out of bed again.

These are my options. I do CA's stuff with a short whip but the string has more to do with it in Parelli stuff.

You all should have made the challege as this- a skill none of the horses has and you each pull a card with the training method. This way everyone can try a different method to get the same result and see which works better and faster.

I found them on ebay for 27.00 and another side for 18.00 with the string. I guess until it gets here I'll use the lunge whip I use otherwise. I checked youtube for the 7 games and I remember all of those and how to do those.

I've got a 'training stick' ... I got it off eBay, and it kinda looks like a carrot stick, but it was only $25 with shipping and the little string. I call it the Jicama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%ADcama) Stick. ;) I mainly use it when I'm handwalking my greedy Haflinger so he doesn't think he can barge past me to try and graze or yank me off to the side to graze. I use it for some of the TTeam stuff too.

I voted for a purple stick just 'cuz I like purple. I have a purple lunge whip and one of my horses has purple brushes. Most of the other stuff like halters etc. are black because I think they all look nice in black but I figured we can have a purple whip because it's cute!!!! I said my halters are black then look at my Sarge's photo and he's wearing an orange halter. They have orange break away halters for hunting season so hopefully anyone with a gun can see they aren't deer. Sarge is colored like a deer, Rompy is darker but still I want to have something orange on them. I need to get the orange tape I heard Dakota talk about to tie it in their tails. I worry about them so much.

I found some cheaper things on e-bay and there is a site that I am not sure of the name of [Some help huh?!]but they have things that aren't that expensive. They have the rope halters cheaper than Parelli and the quality is as good. I like the quality of the Parelli ones so I was worried when I ordered from this place but when it came it's just as good. I've seen some rope halters that are too thick and made from rough rope, I like the thinner softer ones.

My first trainer has totally switched to Parelli, she loves it. She has invited me to her play days but I haven't gone, I figure if I am going to be out of the house I should be riding my own horse and not playing with someone else's. She buys most of her supplies from e-bay and not Parelli. Her big toy balls come from Toys are Us, says they are very good quality and can take abuse from the horses. I gave my guys a regular exercise ball to play with, they had it destroyed in a day! I have to try one from Toys are Us. The horses at our barn mostly love the balls, one plays soccer, it's so cute, he'll kick the ball in a straight line from one end of the arena to the other, he has such a good time. My girl, NO WAY, I have to make her kick it then she acts like she touched something disgusting!!!! She is such a queen. I have a little tiarra charm for her halter, if I could get her to wear a tiarra I'd buy one for her!

Good luck and have fun. Will someone be taking videos? They'd be fun to see.

I figure if I'm any good, I should be able to train a horse with any method. It's just ground work - not throwing a foal over a jump or the group hug kumbaya that comes in later levels. The basics of the 7 games are a decent faoundation - I prefer CA's way, but they're not bad. It's the later stuff that I have problems with.

This is too funny! I think it's a great idea and I'm glad you got the Parrelli card. At least it's something new and a challenge to do.

I just don't expect you putting up ads and taking in horses for Parrelli training after this. lol hahahah......Well, you never know!? They do shell out a lot of money to get there horses Savvy....they forget about getting them selves savvy...Just get the horse to do the games! lol

I voted for the Pink stick. I figure if your going to give Parrelli a try why not give it a go in PINK! :) I personally have the White stick. I got it off ebay and it's a very nice stick with the string and popper on the end for half the price of the name brand stick.

I can't wait to see pictures of you doing the 7 games! hahahah with a PINK stick!!! Hahahah This is going to be great! I also liked the idea of the red and white "pepermint" stick!! I about spit out my coffee!!

No happy pills...just on a mission to prove a point. The method is not the point, it's the common sense and experience in the trainer behind it. It's not cute words, fancy sticks and all that crap that Parelli claims you HAVE to have. It's not about horsenalities or any of that other tree-hugger nonsense either, it's about training the horse to be safe and dependable. You cannot pigieon hole horses into a trainer in a box. DVD's won't do it either. With the Parelli method and any other for that matter, there is a requirement of common horse sense. Those that take on these methods without that thinking they can just "play"...well I call them "training clients".
