I just found out Inka is linebred. Bad- like father to daughter inbred. She isnt crazy or ugly or faulted in any way, so I dont know if its a big deal- its not like there is any Impressive breeding. She is 11 and she hasnt had any problems so far.
How do you feel about line breeding? What are your concerns?

It's one of those iffy things it can either work really really well OR there are major issues. Sounds like in your case it was a good thing :) just my 2 cents

I don't know anything about it. But I will def. be intersted to find out what others think & say about the topic. Sorry I couldn't be of any help! Breeding is NOT my speciality!

It depends....I've seen some very nice horses that are line-bred, and inbred too. I prefer line breeding to in-breeding.....but, sometimes with line breeding you can get some really super nice horses! There is an Arabian horse farm I have admired for many years (Phara Farm), they do lots of line breeding and inbreeding, their horses are really nice and consistently typey and correct. On the other hand, with line breeding you can also reinforce some traits that you may not want to either.

Is line breeding & inbred basically the same thing?

In breeding is father to daugher or mother to son
in Line breeding (or what I have seen) it's separated by a generation so - father to grand daughter

I'm not big in to breeding so I'm sure others will pipe in with more details :)

To me, inbreeding is like playing Russian Roulette! Line breeding's fine, so long as there isn't too much of it.

Poor Inka- her dad and granddad are one and the same....

And I think line breeding is bascially when you have a particular sire/stallion in the pedigree that you are focusing on.....like multiple lines to that stallion.

I cant even find ANY info on her sire/grandsire- its like he never exhisted. Some great stud, huh? I did find a brother to her though who is a stud.

I am not a fan of line-breeding. You either get GREAT results or really bad ones. I have looked at some horses with minor line breeding in the past and just didn't feel right about it.

My mom had a mare that was line bred. She was nutts. She even acted weird. Now this person was " a back yard breeder" but the mare had good bloodlines. Line breeding, Inbreeding however you say it, I don't like it. I know a couple horses that have grandmothers that were bred to fathers etc. Just gives you an eww feeling.....lol.

I won't down a horse who's breeding is this way, but I would not actively persue this as a long term improvement of a particular line or breed.

(I hope that made sence).

Well, line breeding would tend to focus the genes of that line, both good and bad, if any. If there is something particular that a breeder is trying to preserve and strengthen, it's a way to double it's impact on the next generation.

Of course, the defects and potential unintended consequences are also doubled, so it has to be done smartly.

Exactly what WB said but I wanted to add that linebreeding is also very selective breeding.

You would take a great mare and a great stallion to get something even greater. For example, is the resulting foal was a colt and was a crapshoot, you would geld him, instead of throwing him back into the breeding pool. You would try to stop defects from happening. Just like any other type of breeding. Now, IMO, if someone did take 2 poorly matched horses and bred them for the sake of bloodlines, that is wrong.

I don't know how to word this correctly but I am against breeding first generations(?).

Mother to son
father to daughter
brother to sister - even half brother and sisters
grand sire/dam to foals is iffy to me

I have 2 horses that are linebred are are going to be breed together. My mare's grand dam is my stud's great great grand dam. Totally different breeding through the sire's side.

I've had some interesting conversations with my mares breeder and another big hungarian breeder in this regards. I found a very nice stud that I thought would be a perfect match for my mare but wanted to see how everyone else felt as they do have some of the same heritage for my mare it's 5 generations back for the stallion it's 2 back. When I brought this up so far everyone has said the same thing - that's it's not to close and in this case they think this cross will turn out "better get than the mare" now I think she's pretty special so I can't even imagine a baby even better but OOO that would be cool. I don't have any plans to breed her in the next year but maybe the one after that. She needs to prover herself in the show world first. :) and I need to be ready for another baby LOL I just got this one all grown up ;)
