My husband is applying to Stanford University for a PHD in Business/Accounting. It's one shot in a million, but if he gets in we're going to go! It's his dream and I'm supporting it. :D I was just wondering if anyone from here lived around there? I'm interested to know about the area and if there's any horse people there.

I'm about an hour from Palo Alto :) It's a very "Upscale/Well-to-do" area and there are a large number of horsey places around. You'll find more in the way of serious hunter/jumper and eventing show barns but there are smaller more low-key all discipline barns around as well. Palo Alto is famous in the horse world for their Portola Valley Training Center, Spring Down Equestrian Center, and Woodside Horse Park. When I was heavy into showing, Palo Alto area was where most of our "big" shows were held. I think it's probably safe to say, at least in the english world, that the area is THE horse show capitol of Northern California.

Good luck to your husband. I've never been there but my husband's cousin moved there 2 yrs ago. I think they like the area very much but it's expensive. They sold a house in NY State and got quite a bit of money for it and said they can't afford anything there, they are renting an apartment. She mentioned something about can't spend a million $'s for a small home. I don't know I'm only getting this info 3rd hand since I haven't seen her since she moved just know what her mother told my mother in law who told us. They aren't horse people so I haven't heard anything about horses there only about how they can't afford to buy a house and her husband has a very good job and so does she.
My cousin lives near San Fransisco and I know his house was a couple million and it's not that great, it's nice but it's not a mansion or anything. They love CA though and when they come east they make us all look pale and sick, they look so healthy and happy. They truly love it there.

Now that is the truth. Two years ago, you could get next to nothing but the dumpiest house in the worst neighborhood for uner 500k. A nice house in an OK neighborhood was anywhere from 800k and on up. But this economic downturn has done a lot for the housing market around here...good if you're buying, VERY bad if you're selling. There have been 30%-60% drops in value in some places around here.
