I have been in a rather diseased job for the past two years. The pay is great and the hours are flexible, but it is the most stressful and unhealthy job I've ever had. I do outside medical sales and my managers treat me like a doormat, and when I ask for help to acheive the totally unreasonable sales goals they set for me, they blatantly blow me off, then reprimand me for my numbers. I have to work on weekends and I'm on call pretty much 24/7. Even when I went on Christmas vacation to California I was getting at least 3 calls and 5 emails a day with work stuff. They don't care whatsoever about their employees, and conduct layoffs of tenured high performing employees without a care. My manager ignores my ( and my fellow employees ) calls and I only see him maybe once a month as it is so he can pretend like he's putting in an effort to supervise me. This has become such an unhealthy environment for me, I am angry and stressed out continuously. Therefore...... I'M QUITTING! I can't wait. I haven't told my boss yet but I am going back to medical assisting. I got a well paying job at a great clinic where the people seem fantastic and I get to go home at night and not give another thought to what stresses me out at work, and no more weekends! I will have to take a little bit of a paycut, but I think it is totally worth it to have my sanity back. I am so relieved and I can't wait!

Yeah and my hours will be 9 to 5:30 now so I can drag my butt out of bed early and go ride and do chores before work!

Good for you, missdixie. My last job before I ended up being laid off in a reorganization and becoming self-employed was like you describe. The burden lifted in getting out of that environment was amazing. I earn a lot less, but we make ends meet and I'm so happy. This is terrific news and you'll have more energy to help me take on the right-wingers around here. :)

LOL JackieB, unfortunately this may give me a little LESS time on the Politics board. Something just occured to me though ( it's been awhile since I've done this ) when I interviewed we made a very clear verbal agreement on what my pay would be, but when I went to do my employment paperwork we just did a W-4 and a patient confidentiality agreement. Do I need to have something signed with my wages on it, or is the verbal agreement the norm? It's a small private practice, so there are no usual corporate forms or anything.....

BTW JB, what do you do now? I mean what is your self employment business, just curious?

First, regarding your salary. It's not normal to offer a candidate a job without a letter describing the position, making a formal offer, and listing the amount of pay. However, that particular medical office might do it routinely. The potential problem is that if there is a misunderstanding about pay, vacation, benefits, or anything else that you might otherwise consider to be a deal breaker for accepting the job, you don't have much leverage once you're in the position. If it was me, I'd call tomorrow and say once again how delighted I am about coming to work at the new job and thankful for the opportunity to join their group, but if the person who hired you could send a letter via e-mail with a formal offer and salary, you'd be appreciative.

For my self-employment, I'm doing exactly the same kind of work that I did for almost my entire career, and even with most of the same people. I'm just a contract worker now instead of a full-time employee.

I work in college publishing with one of the largest publishers. I am presently filling in as an inside sales rep (95% on the phone) in an open territory. I also write marketing information, help complete software licensing agreements for a student tutorial product, assist with key presentations, and whatever else comes up. I held six different jobs with the company spanning just over 20 years, so I know how to do virtually anything they assign me.

The fantastic thing for me is that I have much more control over how much work I take on now. If I don't feel like I can take on extra work, I just politely decline. It's a fantastic company that I hold in the highest regard. However, just like all top-performing companies in any industry, the demands on the workers are very high. I completely understand. Anyone who works in that environment needs to accept it, but 20 years was long enough for me. So, as long as my wife and I can make ends meet (which looks good for the foreseeable future), I'll be self-employed.

Thanks for asking.

Glad you got a different job.
Seems to me, people in the medical field of any sort are stressed.
Last place I worked, man they were rude, gossipy, bit..s. I quit.
I hope where you are going is better.
One thing that gawls me is, so many nurses talk smack about their patients, smile in your face, back stabber.

Nothing worse than having a job that is toxic. Glad you are able to leave and do walk away with a BIG smile on your face!

Good for you.. your health is the mpst important. Ask for an offer letter with the pay and benefits listed so that you are covered if they try to reneg. Been there done that...

Good for you! I know what it's like to work in a bad, hostile and unhealthy workplace. Unfortunately the medical field seems to run rampant with that sort of thing and that is what I went to school for. I am hoping for a less-stressful job too, and recently interviewed at a couple clinics.

Glad to hear you are moving on to a better, and healthier, job!
