So I'm bit shopping for Cricket. He's been ridden with a tom thumb most of his life (he's 12 now) and we are switching him over to english. He's very well trained and a d-ring is fine in the arena but not outside... the tb comes out there and he wants to go go go. So I'm thinking the transition from curb to snaffle was too quick so I was looking into a kimberwick but one sight said that what I thought was a kimberwick was really an Uxeter bit... So what's the difference? I look at pictures but they look the same to me...

Well, I think what most of us consider a Kimberwick is technically a Uxeter bit, though I've never heard the term before, and I own one. ;)

I guess it's the slots, but I've never seen a Kimberwicke without slots so... go figure.

Ok... so I'm not crazy... that was the site I was reading.

It's the first thing I found when I googled it: "What is she talkin' about? :D" I've never heard the term before.

My friends always refers to the Uxeter Kimberwick just as the Kimberwick. That means I've never seen a kimberwick kimberwick. If you know what I mean 8P haha!

So I'm guessing you know the difference now? We use the Uxeter as a Kimberwick, though :/ and always with a curb chain.
That's if we can't just stick a snaffle & flash on, which seems to do the trick for most of the ponies and horses I've ever ridden.

As for control, I usually see more forward-going horses in Dutch Gags (bubble bit). And pelhams, but I've only ever ridden a pelham with a converter on (I've not been taught how to fiddle with 4 reins yet...I'm quite happy with two).

Uxeter is just a type of Kimberwicke and anymore is the most popular kind. The old-school kimberwickes without the slots are very hard to find.

Jointed-mouth kimberwick - no slots!
FYI - it's known as a kimbLewick (note the "l") and that search retained more no-slot links.

I used to use a low-port uxeter kimberwicke on Kara, and she went really well in it, she really prefered that bit.
