If anyone gets a chance I would encourage reading the Laura Ingalls books. It is amazing how far they drove their horses, and the work that they did. Almanzo Wilder had a team of Morgans...and he broke many horses. I am reading the LONG WINTER...

An Indian came into town and told them that winter would be 7 moons (months) long....

Almanzo drove 12 miles one way in temps that were 40 degree below zero...just to pick Laura up from the school she was teaching at. The horses noses were covered with ice and he had to stop periodically to clear them.

I loved those books as a kid and young teen. :) Would be fun to read them again now.

I picked up about 8 Ingalls books from shopgoodwill.com. Cost me $8.53 and that included shipping!

I loved those books. I don't remember what the name was, but, I thought the one that told about Almonzo's family when he was growing up was interesting. We don't have anything to compare to that type of farming in WY.

I didn't know the Goodwill had an online store. Thanks for the info.

Great books....a good way to pass the time on a cold winter's night.

The year I had the kids with reading diffuculties, I threw the textbook to the wind and used regular books with them and one of the first ones I used was Little House on the Prairie. Their eyes got as big as silver dollars when they saw it and they commented that it was awfully big. The reading teacher and I took them by the hand and led them through it chapter by chapter and at first it was a real chore, but after a couple of chapters they began to enjoy it. When they finished a couple of them told me it was the first big book that they had ever read. Even today those books hit a note with kids.

My girls love those books. Here they have done away with reading text books in the school this year in hopes of getting the children more involved in reading by letting them chose a book and taking turns reading it out loud to the class.

Wow. I 'grew up' in Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Myabe thats why I wanted to be a farm girl? Who knows. Your post reminded me how long its been since I read any of them (like, 25 years!) so I will have to put them back on my list of books to read.

And, yes, horses worked hard over long distances. But they were worked consistently, and most were fit for the work. A book you should look for is called "working horses, looking back over 100 years". It was published in 1991 but has the most AmAZING photographs of horses from the turn of the last century. It tells a lot about the horses, the work they did, and the contraptions they pulled.

your library might have it!

I loved using novels to teach reading. The kids got really excited about reading "real" books. However, as a teacher, I needed to make sure that I got the reading and language skills taught that needed to be taught.

Every time we have a horrible winter I have thought about those books. I read them as a kid but only remember bits and pieces. There is nothing in the books about what YEAR that long winter was...they had 2 or 3 day long blizzards with only small breaks in between. Its got to be the late 1800's...but what year?

I've read the Little House books a couple of times each. We just started renting Little House season 1 on Netflix. I love those early episodes. Sometimes I even get weepy just hearing the opening music LOL! They sure relied on having a good team of horses in those days.

My favorite part was when Laura and Almanzo were courting and he had a bad runaway named Barnum ( I think) and the horse had such a bad rep and then he was good as gold when Laura drove him down Main st. in front of everyone.

The book about Almanzo's family was Farmer Boy.

Miracle Whip, I have the whole collection of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, and I also have another written by another author-it's called Laura- The Life of Laura Ingalls Wilder written by Donald Zochert. The Long Winter would have been about the winter of 1880-81 according to the book.
