Well, in a few minutes I leave for class at our local community college. This will be my first time in a classroom (as a student) in about 25 years. It's Introduction to Acting of all things. After a mortifying experience at jury duty a couple of months ago (was grilled by the defense attorney for my answer to one of his questions) I felt like I should take a class to help me get over my debilitating fear of speaking in front of a group! I was going to take a basic speech class but the times didn't work with my schedule so a friend suggested the acting class.

Arg. I don't even have a notebook! I'll probably have to play the role of everyone's mother LOL. Or maybe we'll just sit around with our eyes closed and pretend we're trees...I don't know. I may even see my older son walking around campus, since he goes there too.

Ok...enough random babbling, I better get going.

Good for you for going back to school! Thats great that you can face your fears of speaking in front a group, I'm not that brave but I wish I was! (on more than one occasion )

I hope you had a nice first day back! There are lots of non-traditional students at my school, and they're just like everybody else - students. :)

Oh how fun! I will NEVER forget my first time back to school when I started college. It hadn't been 25 years, but 7 still felt like a lifetime. Once you get to your class, though, get a seat and get started, it's great. I love going to school. :)

Can't wait to hear how it went yesterday.

Thanks for the moral support! It was actually pretty fun. I'm definitely the oldest one in there. The first part was an overview by the instructor, then we all stood in a large circle for 'loosening up' exercises. Pretty safe. Then we broke up in smaller groups for an icebreaker which had us laughing and chatting so that was good.

I'll reserve judgment for now, but overall, it was a positive experience. I definitely feel that it will 'stretch' me in situations that I would normally avoid.

Oh! There will be several scene assignments - two of them are monologues (ugh!). As the time gets closer, maybe I'll post a thread here for suggestions on a scene...maybe somehow incorporating horse care (pretending I'm grooming a horse and talking to him) or something like that...?

Sounds fun! This forum has been known to help a little with homework too... though I'm not sure we can help much in terms of public speaking... we aren't even real good at parameciums. But it's the thought that counts though, right?

Good for you, glad to hear it went well! I remember my first day going to technical college....I was in my 40's and I was so scared. But, I found that I really liked it and enjoyed going to school, I even got over my fear of getting up and speaking in front of the class, and actually started enjoying that too.
