Apparently my boss decided last night that he needed to lay 2 people off and my boyfriend and I were on the chopping block. We don't really know what we're going to do, but our apartment lease is up on April 1st and we've already notified our landlord we're not renewing. I suppose it's the perfect opportunity to move back home and enroll into school full time (I've been thinking about radiology technology), get a part time job and go from there.

Rebel's board for the month was paid last night and I have 2 more paychecks coming (severence, I guess), plus tax returns soon, which should provide a bit of security for a little while at least. But.....my head is spinning right now and I don't know what to do. I wish I had learned this yesterday, because I wouldn't have gone ahead on paying board.

We knew the economy was unstable, but we figured our jobs were somewhat safe....at least, we didn't expect this to come so soon.

I don't know what to do.

Oh dear. One step forward and two steps back. I know you were nervous about the horse thing, and it appears your resolve is being tested!

Good luck, I'm glad you have a little time, I hope you find something soon.

Sorry to hear that :( We just had the announcement at my work that no merit raises this year and no bonuses. While I'm happy to still have my job it is a bit nerve racking

Hope you get something figured out....

Sorry to hear about your situation. I sure hope everything works out.
I think the both of you should be trying for Unemployment. That may help for a bit.

I'm so sorry. Can you guys get unemployment? That might help a little.

AH mann, that realy sucks! Both of you ?! I would look into unemployment. The office may have job listings available too. I hope every thing works out.

Yeah, we're going to see about unemployment.

Livaward - our company is really small. There are only 6 of us that work there - the president, our secretary, the shop manager, and 3 "laborers" (my boyfriend and I, plus a retired man who was going stir-crazy and came back to work). The retired man was laid off a couple weeks ago because there wasn't enough work for all of us. We thought we were ok, but our secretary explained to me that for this month, we have one job to do and that'll bring in $350. That's less than one paycheck before taxes for me. Our boss takes good care of us, so I know this wasn't an easy decision for him to make and I hold no ill will towards him. I know they'll help us find something else and provide an excellent reference.

The timing of it just sucks....badly. My trainer is helping me find something. Next month I'll likely be farm sitting for a friend of her's for $50/day + room and board. I just e-mailed to find out more. If nothing else, there's that.

Really though, I've been needing a change. This isn't quite the thing I was thinking.....but maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

I'm so sorry you lost your job, file for unemployment right away if you can.

I think moving back home is a good idea, and going to school for radiology tech is a great idea. The medical field is still doing pretty well and they always needs RNs and x-ray techs, etc. Here in my area you can get a two year Associate degree in radiography, and there are jobs out there for that. In fact that was what I was going to go to school for ten years ago when I went to technical college (rad tech), but I went for ultrasound instead (and then later on Health Information Technology). Having a medical background will be very helpful in these tough times. While many places are laying off in my area.....all of the larger medical clinics and hospitals here are adding on and building new clinics and additions, and many are hiring. No job is very secure right now, but medical will always be fairly stable compared to the other jobs out there, plus it pays well and is very interesting!

yipes...that sucks.

If you've worked there for a year and were a full time employee, you should be eligible for unemployment

Thanks guys.

I'm feeling a bit better. Just went to the barn and had some horse time with Rebel. I also talked to my mom and she thinks it'd be a good idea to sign up for unemployment and just kind of sit on things. Like I said, our lease is up soon and I have the money for the bills....things will just be tight. And as far as Rebel is concerned, I'm stubborn enough to make this work. I think my sanity and happiness depends on it. I'll collect unemployment until I move back home and can find part-time work, enroll in school full time, and just go from there.

The thing that scares me more than losing the horse that I finally got, more than being broke.......is my relationship with my boyfriend. He's thinking the same as me, getting back into school, etc....but we've lived together for 2 years and been together for 2.5 years. We've been working together for over 1 year....it's going to be really hard to not live with him anymore and to go in separate directions for a while. I'm scared that he's going to get really involved with school and either meet someone else or decide it's too much work and break it off. Which.....if it happens, then it does......and I'll have to accept it. And there's no sense in worrying about something that HASN'T happened yet. But like, I'm having so much thrown at me at once, I don't know what in the world to do or think.

Ugh, who needs a vacation? I do....

Oh I am so sorry. I can't imagine how stressful that would be! I can't believe they laid you both off at the same time!

I'm sorry for you and your boyfriend. But when one door closes...

Radiology is an excellent field. Good money, you don't have to deal with blood, you get to use high-tech equipment. I'd consider that myself if I was just getting started in my career.

If the love is strong your relationship will survive :) Just have an ultimate goal together and work towards it :)
