... so I can get a JOB! No male anywhere in the vicinity of north Georgia can complain about not being able to find a job - because apparently all the jobs are reserved for them. For the record - this vent is Will's fault, because he suggested I post it (maybe so he didn't have to hear it again :p).
Now, this may be a common occurrence - but I was raised by a family who knows that women are just as good as men. We can speak without being spoken to, aim a gun and shoot, AND we can work on a farm - all without testicles might I add! My Papa raised me to know that I can do a days work just as well as any male can... because I can. My father's side of the family is another story (on that side young ladies don't ride horses or wear jeans - filthy habits)... but I'm close to my Mom's side.
It all started Saturday, when I joked to one of my father's friends (who owns a coffee shop) that he should hire me (he was busy). He told me he couldn't afford to, but when it gets to that point, he preferred to hire men, so he doesn't have to "worry about leaving them alone". Then he said that he admitted that "sounds chauvinist". No, that is chauvinist - and pretty darned stupid. He has such good coffee, too. Oh well, there are other coffee shops who might appreciate my patronage - who do hire women.
This week I called a man who had advertised at my college that he needed someone to help pick up eggs at a commercial egg farm. Nana and Papa had a commercial laying house for 30 years - guess who helped them pick up eggs until they retired? My Mom, my aunt and ME. The man asked if I was inquiring for my boyfriend. I told him no, I had experience picking up eggs, that I knew what the work was like and I already completely lack a sense of smell - he told me he didn't hire women. That's fine, I don't need to work for someone who'd view me as less anyway.
Later that day I found an ad at a local tack shop - someone was going on a trip and needed their horses fed. I called, a woman answered - and I asked a few questions about her horses. She answered them pleasantly enough, then asked if I was calling for my boyfriend. I told her no, I have four horses- three of which I've raised myself, have had horses for nearly a decade, and I know how to care for and handle them. She told me she preferred for a man to feed her horses.
Today, I heard two women talking about how one of them needed an exercise rider for her horse and she just couldn't find the right one. I'm kind of related to one of them, so I walked over and said hi. My relative mentioned "don't you have horses, she's looking for someone to ride", and I said yes, then offered to ride the horse. She declined, informing me that this particular horse required either herself or a man to ride. Seriously though, I probably don't want to ride that particular horse anyway.
So, if you're male and in northern Georgia - buddy I can find you a job! Sorry that vent was so long... it's amazing how stupid people really are. And since when can't boyfriends call to inquire about their own stupid jobs? Really. And yes, I do feel better now.
