So, I'm thinking about places I'd like to move to after I graduate college and I'm considering Nevada. I know we have at least a couple people here from Nevada...Maybe you guys could answer some questions for me? I'm specifically looking at the Reno/Carson City area at the moment.

What is is like living in Nevada? How's the weather? :) What is it like owning horses in Nevada versus somewhere else? How is the equine industry there? What kind of showing/riding is common in your area? What do you like about living and owning horses where you live? What do you dislike?

Thanks so much, guys! :)

How's the weather?

Hot! And the nearest shade is in California. ;)

:D I do think I would miss the Midwest autumns...The pretty leaves...

I've heard that the weather is not as hot in the West of Nevada, but is very hot in the South...Is that true?

Well, not as hot is relative. :D Like being not as hot as a blast furnace.

It's too hot for me in summer, but most places are. I'm not heat tolerant. If you are, you may love it. A friend down there in that area belongs here, but she sure hasn't been around much! She gets snow in winter, when it rains it rains rivers... then the desert grows up and is green awhile, till it dries out. They have wild horses around in the hills, and in the heat of summer they ride early early... like at dawn, before it gets too hot.

She shows Appaloosas, and there seemed to be fair size classes in her pictures.

I'm much more tolerant of heat than I am of snow...I really want to get away from the snow. I've lived in the Midwest my whole life and I'm ready to get out, lol. Plus, that dry heat is much easier for me to tolerate than the humidity we've got here in the summer. It's like when I was in Spain ;) A dry heat is much less stifling than that thick, damp air I'm familiar with :)

Thanks for the info, WB! :D

Yerrington, Virginia City, Reno areas get snow and pretty much 3 seasons. It's nowhere near the cold or snow like that of the midwest but it is chilly and can dip in the freezing mark.
Up in that area is a lot of horse activities. More so than here in Vegas.
If I was to relocate, I would choose Yerrington/Virginia City areas.

Now for the good things; (Vegas)
There is thousands of miles of BLM lands to ride.
Ride 12 months
Mountains, redrocks, petroglyph's, lakes, snow.
Summer time heat means night time riding and traveling to the mountains.
No tornado's, blizzards, hurricanes.
Sunshine 360 days out of the year.

Here in Vegas, the heat in the summer time is "AWFUL" hot (100+) We don't have the high humidity as some areas but who cares when it's that hot.
Our monsoon weather begins in late July and runs until late Aug. which any amount of rain will create a flood.

I would love the dry heat.....the humidity we get here is unbearable.

I agree, Remali :( I'm originally from just outside Chicago and now living in Ohio for college.

The list of pros is seriously outweighing the list of cons at this point!

Reno/Carson area is a lot different than the Vegas area. You still have miles and miles of BLM land to ride on but the desert is high desert and you are very close to some beautiful trails in Tahoe! The climate in the summer is much cooler than it is down here and you still get a winter with snow. There are some beautiful ranches around Carson and Minden. There is a lot of ranching history up there but if you ride english there are some really nice hunter/jumper and dressage barns there also. I love the area and wouldn't mind relocating up there some day. I probably wouldn't want to live in Reno though. I'd rather commute from one of the smaller towns.

Oh yeah, and if you want to get away for the weekend it is a pleasant distance from San Francisco or Napa!

Thanks, Vegashorselady! All the stuff you said really confirms a lot of the reasons I was thinking of moving there :) I likely wouldn't live in Reno, but in that general area. I need to be near a larger city...I'm a suburban girl! I think I'd go through withdrawal if I lived all the way out in the country, lol. ;)

We'll see what happens! Thanks for all your input, guys!

Hey, you guys who live in Nevada, do you have any horse-related websites that you visit often? Horse real estate and properties, horse classifieds, horse organizations/associations, horsey jobs in Nevada? :) Anything like that?
