I was asked about this today and I have no idea what it is...or if it's the right name. Anybody have any ideas?

Well, Google thinks when I type sparinger bit, maybe I mean Sprenger bit.
Appears to be a brand name... make all kinds of different bits.

Well, now you know as much about them as I do.
Google is a marvelous tool ;)

hmmm, would you buys such a bit if you were someone who just rides for pleasure? A student asked me if she needed one and I told her I didn't know what it was but I would check is why I ask.

Probably not. Not for a snaffle bit that looks pretty much like every other snaffle bit. ;) But there aren't a lot of names I go out of my way for.

That's what I thought. I have a couple of Mylers just because I do. I do notice a little difference in my Myler D ring and my "whatever brand" D-ring but I don't usually recommend students buy them unless they're big time show riders.

Yeah, a lot of the price might be that name brand recognition, although the Herm Sprengers are German made. Maybe there's something with the metal or something that makes them 'better' or something, but if one is just a pleasure rider, your $21 Korsteel bit'll work just as well as the HS.
(On the other hand, one could always keep a lookout on eBay. I got my Herm Sprenger hackamore that way -- usually sells for $82 at Dover. I ended up paying $36. About $11 more than the Korsteel hack I was going to get. With shipping it came out to $41.)
