Well, ever since we started Tyke on MSM he has been a different horse.

It used to be, in the last 6-8 months or so, he would not run in the pasture with the other horses. He has really slowed down since Spring 08. Now, Tyke is 25(turned 25 on January 1, 09 since I don't know his real birth date and vet guessed him to be 24 last year) and never showed his age until last year. About two weeks ago he was getting really stiff and was dragging his front right leg a little, which is when we had the vet out who suggested arthritis. We started him on MSM.

But now.. He has been so much more spunky and twisty! He has been very vocal to us, he's been bossing the other horses around like old times(He's not mean or overly aggressive) and best of all, my Mom said when she called all the horses to the barn the other day that he was hauling butt and in the front! He NEVER does that anymore! He has been last in line to the barn for the past few months because he just walks while the others run ahead. Today I took him for a little walk in hand and he had a lot of bounce in his trot. I can only imagine how nice it'll be when we start going on rides again. I was missing the old days. I love my old boy.

That is so great! Tyke is a beautiful boy.:)

I've noticed a big difference in Dakota too (he's 19) when I put him on a joint supplement. It's really seemed to help him. I'm glad it's working for Tyke too.xD

Aw, that's great news!!! I love it when they make a turnaround like that, my old dog (15 in May) has days like that when he's back to how he acted when he was young again, makes me feel so good!

He is a great looking horse. I had Dolly on supplement but took her off of it this winter because it went up 10.00. But I want to put her on something else but not sure what. she was on Next level. What do you have your horses on? I think she keep up with the other horses when she was on it.
Glad to hear he is doing good.

That's great to hear! MSM has done wonders for Gypsy over the years. Hyaluronic Acid(HA), is good, as well.

I'm a big fan of SmartFlex Sr. It does have some devil's claw and boswellia in it though, which are pain relievers as well as anti-inflamatories.

I'm very happy.. I took him on a ride and he had a lot of bounce in his stride. I only walked, though. I want to give him a couple more weeks before I start doing any serious riding with him.

For all those who are going to start your horses on supplements-- good luck! Hoep you ll have good success.. It sucks when you have to do it for whatever reason, but at least it's a way to keep them comfortable and sound.

Thanks for the link, Gypsy. I will send it to Mom and see what she thinks. We are actually planning on switching him to flex wafers.. Eventually something with glucosamine in it via vet's suggestion.

I've known for years that Dude has needed some form of MSM for his arthritis/ringbone. He also has navicular which I know doesn't respond to MSM, but I know it can't hurt either. I was going to start him and my mare on Majesty's Wafers, but now I'm wondering if this product would be more beneficial. Sonya recommended a supplement to me from SmartPak but I'm not sure it was the same one. What do all of you think?

It seems as though the MSM isn't enough, that they need the glucosamine as well. Am I pretty much on the mark here?

I'm pretty sure you're right, which is why we're putting Tyke on Majesty's Flex Wafers as soon as the MSM is gone. The vet recommended that we get something with glucosamine. I would just go with the flex wafers. Looking at Tyke now he still seems a bit stiff on some days, but not nearly as bad as before.

My only concern is giving them the anti-inflamatorie's on a regular basis. Don't want stomach troubles. I think perhaps I'll order the Majesty's Wafers. Everyone seems to be out of the larger quantity except Valley Vet.

Thanks FatSpottedAppy!!
