I just spoke with the vet to confirm Muffins appointment for tomorrow. He needs his spring shots and exam before he goes to in for saddle training.
He gets a free dental exam. So, I asked how much do they charge to float teeth if he needs it. He will most likely need it. He's never been floated yet and he's going to be turning 3 in May.
They told me they don't do "hand floats" they only do motorized floats and that they are better then "hand floats" and get the back teeth. She said "hand floats" don't do a good enough job and that motorized floats last longer and are better.
$550!!! Are you kidding me!!
Has anyone ever heard of this? Or the price they are wanting to charge me?

Yeah, the dentists that i used have always had the motorized things, machines, whatever. But that's a pretty stiff charge - does it include the shots, farm call, and everything, or is that only the floating? I think the highest i paid for a float was $350 or something.

Whoa! That's not normal...
Niko is having his teeth floated next thursday by a very good vet that use motorized/electric tools and its only $150

hrm...I'm not a fan of someone who says ONLY one method works best and is the only way to go...sounds a little fishy to me. I don't have a horse so I've never paid to have their teeth floated but 550 sounds like a lot.

my vet does a power float...it runs about 100-150, depending on if the horse needs sedated or not. it actually costs more if I were to request him to do it by hand, because it takes longer and is more tiring for him...which I understand!

Last year I paid $90 for a power float and that included the sedation and I am located in New York state where everything tends to be expensive. $550 seems like a ridiculous amount. I guess I would be looking for a vet that does teeth and is cheaper.

Power floats are better, but I've never paid near that much. It's been in the neighborhood of $150 usually, including sedation and the farm call.
On edit... Not sure why a power float would "last longer". That depends on the age and bite of the horse! But it does allow for a finer job.

Thankx everyone :) I thought that was an outrageous amount!
That's not including a ranch call. I have to bring Muffin in or they will charge me and additional $100 to come out here (even if I just wanted his shots only). I have no idea if that comes with sedation or not but I'm assuming it does with that kind of price tag.
They will give me a discount IF I sign up for there Well Horse program again for this year. That would mean I would have to pay $350 for the full years worth of shots (spring/fall) and pay another $385 for the "discounted" motorized float!!
I'm going to call over vets and see what they charge. I called a friend and he said he gets his horses done out of town (he lives out of town about an hour) and they only charge $40-60 for a float.
I was just shocked when she told me the price. Like it was an everyday price that was normal. $550 is not "normal". I would expect my horse to come back with gold plated teeth and diamond inlay for that price! lol

I hate to tell you this hon, but that is ridiculous. I had both horses will ALL shots, coggins pull, sedation and float for a total of 485.00 Oh, and that included their yrly wellness exam. To break down the float, including sedation, it was 105.00 per horse.
Oh, and that is with the machine.
Sorry, no pics, vid only.
And my vet is hot..lol.

My horse is getting floating "motorized" this weekend. It starts at $85 + depends on how long it takes and how much sedation is needed.

Wow, those prices listed are almost the same as what I paid for a hand float. I paid 111.50 for Sedation and Hand float. Not including farm call, other shots, etc.
Iris, that price you listed though is ridculous just basing off the prices the others have said.
I hope you can find you one cheaper, but still does the job like you want. :) Best of luck to you and Mr. Muffin! :)

Yeah, that's very steep!! We pay around 100 to 150 here per horse depending on what needs to be done and how much drugs it takes. I'm a firm believer in the power floats being better than the hand floats but no way would it cost that much. That's ridiculous!!!
Good heavens. Sounds like the vet wants to pay for the new equipment lickety split.
I wouldn't assume a machine float is better then a hand float. It's better for the human, because you can do them without feeling like your arm is going to croak and fall off. There is a potential for overdoing the job, with the machine, that needs factored in.

Wow, that is insane! The vet that does my horses teeth specializes in equine dentistry and it is 160 for a routine float. If there is something extra like a tooth abcess or something then it might run up to to 300 but that's it. I didn't know any vets still did hand floats, lol!

That is insane!!!!!
The vet school I work for charges $85. Before I worked here I brough in a mare I was training, and with her being a new patient (they do a little work up and history), sedation, and a power float... it was $85!!!
Your vet is robbing you blind for that price!

I agree with everyone here. That price is outrageous! I just had both my horses done, power float, sedation and Dallas had his "goods" cleaned....total for all was around $420. I don't remember down to the last dollar, but it certainly was less than $500 and it was for TWO horses!
Edited to add, this included having both the vet and the dentist!

I'm taking Muffin in today to the vet for his shots. I will get some pictures of his vet visit but I WILL NOT get his teeth done with this vet!

I wish it was $90 where I am! About $120 for my floats, not sure if that includes the sedation or not, but the vet uses a combination of hand and power floating, depending on what the horse's reaction is and how easy they are to float. I.e. Fred needed a little hand floating because he was pitching a fit and the vet was trying not to sedate him again if she didn't have to, wherease Cheyenne's float was all power.

Well, the float was part of his routine spring call with shots and sheath cleaning. The whole visit was $340, but the float was $90 of it, the rest was shots sheath and Coggins including a documentary photo.

That $120 was just the float, nothing else. Add on the barn call and sedatives, times the float and seds by two, that's the entire visit. The vet is really good though, I would rather dole out the $ and get superior care than not and feel the side effects.

Has the vet actually gone in and felt around in his mouth? Is he having wolf teeth extracted at the same time?
Because other than wolf teeth, if they're in already, I'm not sure a typical just-turning-three should NEED his teeth done if he has a reasonably straight mouth. Our mare didn't need it the first time until near 6. He should be checked before serious bitting and training certainly, and checked one or twice a year after that, but unless he's got some alignment issues that have caused a problem, it might be early to assume he needs much done at all, beyond just a rasp or two.

He had his teeth checked last year and they were fine. I had his wolf teeth pulled then for only $46 from this same vet. Now they want to charge $550 for a float when they have not seen his teeth yet and they were fine last year? There just trying to jack me for money. That's why I'm not going to use them anymore. I don't like the vet, she is very closed minded and only tells you what she wants you to know with out explaining any other options or answering your questions. She acts like her word is gold and you should not question her recommendation.
The only reason I am going back is because they owe me shots. I'm still going to have to pay the difference because I am getting his Spring shots not the Fall shots they owe me. Theres more to the spring shots then the fall so I will have to pay for the extra shots like Rabies and West Nile and the 5-way.
The difference is around $110. But, he gets his sheath cleaned, dental exam (that I can look inside and see for myself if he needs floated), wormer and basic health exam.
After this I'm not using this vet again.
Last year Muffin Colliced and they would not come out, didn't give me a call back to check on him or anything. A different vet called me back the next day just to see how he was doing but MY vet never once calls and refuses to come out because she has routine clients in for check ups!! Um, I am on your well horse program and I'm a regular client!!!! What about my horse that is very sick and needs a vet!!
I was so furious!! I'm trying to be nice to them so I can get this over with and they wont jack me around. If they knew just how bad I don't like there service and how I am never going to use them again they would most likely charge me even more. So, I'm keeping my cool tel this is over.

MORON ALERT !!!! LOL Don't use this person, because that is absolute BS. Getting the back teeth is merely a matter of using a speculum, which opens the mouth wide enough to get to the back teeth. Once there...it's merely a matter of the abilities of the person floating.
How "long" the float lasts is merely a matter of genetics.....how fast the horses teeth erupt and how fast they wear.....PERIOD!

Your vet dosnt explain or show you what is going on with things? Wow, Im glad your dumping her, she sounds horrible.
My vet taught me how to give shots, explains things, talks WITH me, helped me when City was lamed up by the farrier, and has a nice butt...LOl...just added that last part for you...lol;)
His wife works with him, and he has a great crew(one tech Im leary about, she gave me bad advice when City choked, I knew what to do, she told me the opposite, then she called me back and said the vet said,,,,,,,well duh, thats what I said)
I hope you find a great vet!!

$550 for a motorized float isn't all that bad. The lady I used back home said her set-up was close to $2000. She looked like a mad scientist with a miners light on her forehead and all her tools were cablr driven with suction tube, an irrigator etc... Oh wait... you mean $550 to have his teeth floated?! I'm all about charging what you're worth, but that's just crazy!!!

Weeell, maybe if Vick's hot vet with the cute butt came and did the float in a chipendales outfit it would be worth the 550. ;) :innocent:

Vicky knows ALLLL about people (ahem) with nice butts. :D
Iris, I think it would hilarious to watch that! Unless the vet's wife was there? LOL :p
Vicky will probably faint next time on purpose. Just make sure it's only him that could revive you and no one else.
