NOOOO!!!! I was DYING to see the match-up between him and Curlin. This is horrible.

Sometime during the workout Big Brown had “grabbed a quarter” – meaning he made contact with his right hind hoof to an area in his rear lower right front hoof and leg – and gashed away 3-4 inches of flesh and hoof.

That's just so you know it wasn't his bad feet that caused the injury and made him retire.

This is another blow to horse racing. I can't have been the only one looking forward to a Curlin-Big Brown match-up.

*coughcough*

Actually, I've talked to some people I know. Grabbing a quarter isn't necessarily a career-ending injury, plenty of horses do it (even non-racing ones) and get 60-90 days off.

But of course, Big Brown was slated to retire at the end of the season anyway, so they're shipping him off. to Three Chimneys now.

I still would maintain that his bad feet did contribute to a retirement, in a way. Dutrow's been working him on the grass because it's supposedly better for him. It's also slipperier. Or something.

Yeah I read that part, but for a horse who's last race is in 12 days and is slated for a $50 million stud career at Three Chimneys it is.

Hmm I didn't notice that thread. When was it posted?

Lots of horses that have good feet have had the same injury.

Yeah someone posted this before. The owners announced that he won't race anymore. Hes moving on to his career as a stud. Looks like the match up between him and Curlin will never happen.

Look at the bright side, that horse doesn't have to work with Rick Dutrow anymore.

But of course, gotta ship him off now that he's got nothing left to prove. Although, I think Three Chimneys kind of shot themselves in the foot with how much they paid for him, and what the rumors seem to be about a possible stud fee. I know they have Smarty Jones still standing for 100k, even though he's not been getting a lot of winners, and never ran a lick after the Belmont, but I've heard that Big Brown might not go that high. Time will tell, I guess.

Yesterday. ;)

True enough, and lots of them go on to run again afterwards. But he was being worked on the grass as it was being touted as softer for his feet. Also, it would be questionable if he would have been sound enough to race another season, hence why he was retiring this year.

I BEG to differ. First of all Smarty Jones finished second in the Belmont which is much better than last and was only beaten in the final furlong by Birdstone by a length and a half I believe. PLUS his very first crop is only just 2 years old this year. So of course he hasn't turned out many winners. They're still pretty young and untried. He HAS had a couple maiden winners. Sorry about that. I love Smarty Jones and I've read lots of good comments on his foals the year they were born. And I believe that a second by only a length and a half in the Belmont is a LOT better than finishing last after being pulled up.

hence why he was retiring this year.

Even if he had good feet he still would've retired this year. While some of it may have had been due to his feet, it was still the greed and guaranteed money stud fees bring that brings about early retirement.

Ok sorry I'm done.

How dissapointing - I was looking forward to seeing him in the Breeders Cup. I hope he has a good retirement!
