When is the youngest that colts are able to do the deed?

Prodigy has been getting rowdy as of late.. I was outside with the horses, and all the sudden I heard Prod making studmuffin noises to Raen. Well, she started squirting and Prod mounted her.. only he got the wrong end. :) Of course Tyke came over and started stomping and squealing and broke it up.. He seems to be the birth control of the herd.

Prod will be 5 months old this coming Friday. The vet can't do the gelding until early Spring before the flies come.

Sounds like it's time to seperate the herd... yes it is possible for you colt to breed your mare unfortunately. Your vet wont' do a fall gelding?

Time to seperate, that is for sure. Find a different vet that will do the gelding if your current one will not.

Our vet is booked for gelding until Spring and I've looked for vets yet can't find any that are close. There are some near in NY but they're not allowed to do work across borders are they..? Can they really produce viable sperm at 5 months? I'll separate him tomorrow if I really need to, I was hoping to keep him on April until he was 6 months old..

You know, I'm not sure of that. I have heard rumors of a 6 month breeding mom and getting her pregnant, but nothing I can verify.
