Well this time we KNOW what happened and it wasn't his fault. I got another call from my BO today...and this one was the real deal. Once she said..."Dallas is hurt" my heart sank!
They are overseeding the pasture so all the horses have to be kept off it. There are 6 horses there total....I own 3 of them. My girls are kept together in a turnout and Dallas is usually by himself in his own turnout. The other 3 are being kept in an enclosed area off the pasture. Well, that area is not big enough for all 3, so the BO put the BIG paint in with Dallas. They do not get along and since he is so much bigger than Dallas, he can just reach over on top of Dallas and grab what ever he wants. This time he grabbed several chunks of hide and skin off Dallas back.
I went out there and sure enough, there is NO way I can ride Dallas this weekend! :( There is not one bite mark, but several!!! Lots of hair gone and some of the skin is ripped. I am just so upset about this. He has been doing so well with his training and being at the gymhanas. This is going to be a major set back, since it will take a minimum of 3 weeks before I can ride him.
I hosed him down, and put ointment on everything. He flinched everytime I touched him, so I know he is really sore. My poor little guy, this just makes me wanna .....:puke:
This was taken this afternoon after I had hosed him down and put the stuff on him

My first question to my BO on the phone was..."can I put a saddle on him?" when she said No, I was just so upset! I know horses get into it....I could have dealt with the bites ANYWHERE else, but this just tears me up! He's been doing SOOOOO good. I was looking forward to riding him this coming weekend.
Doesn't look like I will be doing any riding soon. :( Last time this happened it took over a month before I could put a saddle on him and back then it wasn't this bad!

Ah I'm sorry about Dallas. Those wounds are nasty. You may not be able to ride but you could still have some fun doing some groundwork with him, right?

poor guy at least it does not look like anything was really bad so it will heal quick.
Poor boy - it looks painful. What the heck was the barn owner thinking just tossing 2 horses together like that, especially when its known they don't get along? If they can't be out in their normal pastures for some reason - stall one or find a more suitable match that do get along.

I think it's a matter of space right now while the pasture is getting seeded. She didn't want to put him in Ladybird because if anything happened to her everyone would be devasted....plus Dallas is pretty accident prone, so stalling him up would have been a disaster. I am trying to think of a decent solution, but it's hard, because we don't want to stall Ladybird, we could stall Dreamer, but then she will start cribbing again. I just don't understand why the 3 horses can't be kept together in the one area...I know it's small, but Trig, Tuff and Taffy all get along.

I think no matter who needs to be stalled, I wouldn't stand for any of the horses being turned out with that horse. Stall him!

Are you paying board for your 2 runs? Or are you paying board just to have your horses there, she can move them as she pleases?
If the later is true, Im not to keen on that.
If the first statement is true, Id be pissed and have her pay for the meds he needs. Friends or not, those are your horses.

WOW, those are some nasty bites!!! They will take awhile to heal and poor Dallas, it could change his personality with other horses which would be hard to overcome especially since you were doing so well taking him to the shows to get used to socializing in that way.
Has the BO given you an apology for their actions of putting them together that lead to Dallas getting Bit? I'm sure she feels bad but you just don't put horses together like that without really keeping a close eye on their behavior towards each other and this could have been prevented.
I'm so sad to see those pic's of him and it really is setting you back on your training with him. I send my Prayers and well wishes for his recovery and I hope there isn't any long lasting personality changes with other horses in a social setting. Get well soon Dallas and I know you will do everything you can to get him healed up properly, you are such a good Mom!
Sincerely, Stacy

Oh poor Dallas.
I would have to agree with NOT turning him out with this horse ever again. Vet bills are too expensive and God Forbid, anything worse happened. Not a bright idea on the BO's side.

I agree that the biting horse needs to be moved. Does the BO have a round pen? I would not tolerate another horse repeatedly hurting mine. Yes they need to learn the pecking order but if it isn't working then then it isn't working. You really need to tell her this has to stop now and that if these bites get infected she will be responsible for the bil.

Vick....yep, I am paying just to board there. Although I did pick the run my horses were going to be in. BUT I ended with 3 horses instead of just 2...LOL The BO has my full permission to move my horses around during the day to keep everyone safe. The GIANT that got ahold of Dallas did get him through the stall too. He can just reach over and grab Dallas. So she can't stall either of those horses near eachother.
I am going to talk with my BO today on a rotation plan until the pasture comes up. The other 3 horses can be rotated in the arena during the day. Dallas could possibly go in with Ladybird, and Dreamer could be stalled for a few hours. Then rotate Dallas in a stall. Ladybird likes to sleep in the turnout at night, so I don't like stalling her up.
I am 100% convinced now that the GIANT is the one who took a chunk out of Dallas's back the last time. We first thought he racked his back on a tree limb in the pasture, but Ryder65 was right, it WAS a bite mark. Now I can say that Dallas does sometimes think he is still a stud, so he can provoke sometimes, but he is so small, he would loose everytime agianst the Giant out there.
Here is the size difference...

this is the same horse we went trail riding with last month. You can obviously see who is who..
This is where the Giant and other two horses are kept till the pasture in the background grows.

This is the area my 3 are kept
http://i343.photobucket.com/albums/o446/CountryGirl43/100_0612.jpg
there are 4 closeable stalls under here, but the Giant can reach over and still get Dallas.

this is the arena...

Here are all my horses...Dallas is in his own turnout, Ladybird and Dreamer are in a turnout together and in this photo they are standing in Dreamers stall area.

The BO's main concern is keeping Ladybird safe. Plus I have to keep Dreamer calm till Friday as that is when I take her in for her MRI to see if she qualifies for the study. Ugh....

Aww, understood then. I was pissed at her for you...lol.
I sure hope that a good rotating plan comes about CG.
I know you have worked so hard to get him to where he is.
At least there is ground work you can do with him to keep him up to date.
You ever find anything out about hot wire and a solar electric box. That would keep the big boy on his own side, if he were stalled there. Id have it on hand for those just in case moments.

Well, we put Dallas in the arena last night. I have to go by there this morning to see how he is doing. I cleaned his wounds again last night, he was still REALLY ouchy, so I gave him some bute. He followed my every move, and when I was hosing him off, he kept biting at the rope and the pole. I know he was doing it because it hurt, but at least he wasn't trying to hurt me.
We just need to keep an eye out for infection. There is one spot where it is just a "flap" of skin and he likes to roll in the dirt. It was hard to rinse it off, but it had to be done.
