Well, we did it again! Hubby and I drove from PA to Mt. Vernon, KY two days ago and bought two beautiful spotted saddle horses. They're gaited and ride like a dream. They are very well trained and move just by voice commands. They're both 6 years old and 15 hands.

We wanted to get smaller horses than our drafts--something we don't need a ladder to climb up on! Plus, they're used to traffic and everything else you can throw at them. I didn't know what I had been missing until we rode them. I love my big guys but they are so huge. I feel much safer and confident on these new boys.

Hubby bought Rock for himself. He has all colors of brown long hair right now and is buckskin (I think) underneath. And, for myself, well, I had to get another black and white. His name was Tubbs but we changed it to Boone in honor of Daniel Boone, since we bought him in that part of the state. We get them in 2 weeks and I just cannot wait!

Actually, WDW, you're the one that got me thinking. I love my big boys but am nervous on them so I started looking around and well, you know how that goes. Next thing I know, we're on our way to Kentucky!! I'm not quite sure what we're going to do with the big guys. We don't need 5 horses so we may end up selling them. A local Amish gentleman wants them but I hate the thought of them working so hard. My hubby thinks I'm crazy but I need to think about it a little more.

Yeah, its just not so much fun riding when your nervous, and I am sure you will make a great decision about them, maybe they aren't for you guys, but will be good for someone else :) Tell me what happens!

Rock is very pretty, but I love Boone! Good for you guys. Hope you'll enjoy them.
BTW you are not crazy, it just shows you care about them. Selling a horse is hard enough. If you sold them to someone you are not comfortable with it would bug you for ever and there is no changing mind once they are sold.

Boone is just beautiful! I know how you feel I rode a gaited horse for the first time yesterday and I immediatly fell in love with the way they move! I'm happy for you and jealous too.

Thank you everyone. I couldn't be more excited. I was thinking of riding the big guys the other day and just got so nervous. Then I was reading this forum and everyone is so excited about their horses and I thought, I want to feel like that again. Now I do. I had to admit to myself that even though I love the drafts, they're just too big and too much horse for me. They're sweeties but I just worry too much about the long fall down when I'm on them.

Walkin, I was thinking Grulla too. I'll have to see when he sheds out.

welcome to the SSH Owners Club..haha

I have a SSH pony :) Love her.

Your two look lovely!!!

Rock COULD be a buckskin--just a darker hue..a teacher of mine in college had a dark buckskin that looked very golden bay....but had to be a buckskin since his sire was a perlino..lol

Your new horses are beautiful! Can't wait to see more pictures.

How old are your other horses? They really are nice stocky looking boys. If they're young there's no harm in working hard. The only thing I would be worried about is what he would do with them once they can't work hard anymore.

My big boys, Jack and Oreo, are only 7 and 9. I agree, Mountain Creek, it worries me where they would end up. The Amish gentleman called last night and offered only what the would get at the Amish auction--a couple hundred dollars each. No way, we paid $4000 for Jack and $3000 for Oreo!! I'd be willing to sell for less but not that much less! So, I have to think about it more.

Oh and I don't blame ya, I wouldn't sell them untill you can find a nice home wehre they'll be taken care of, and treated great.

Good eyes Gliderider!! That is where we got them. I heard such good things about them, I had to check out their horses. Did you get your horse there?

Gliderider
03-08-2009, 10:29 AM
Yeah I bought a horse from them. I don't have him anymore. He rode good but was very mean to other horses. He ran the weight off the rest of my herd pretty bad and would kick at other horse's when being rode. His name was Walker's Red Cloud. He was a red roan sabino TWH very pretty. I was sad he would not make up with the rest of my herd and I had to sale him. I wonder if Eric remembers Walkers Red Cloud. I know he has many so he might not. I will look up a picture of him and show you.

Congrats!! They're so beautiful!! I've got two spotted saddles, neither one is gaited because they are never trianed, but I LOVE them :)

Here are a couple pictures of Walkers Red Cloud. I am sure the place looks familiar to you. :) These were taken while he was at Adam's place with Eric riding.

MidKnight Moon if they are full stock spotted saddle horses they don't need to be trained to gait. Gaiting is natural doesn't need to be taught.

Yikes, Gliderider, I'm sorry he was such a meanie! The two we bought will be in a pasture and barn of their own. He was going to introduce them to each other this week so they would bond before they get here. I hope they like each other. They seemed calm together while we were looking them over. Fingers crossed they get along!!

I am sure they will get along fine. I just had to pick one of the few that just can't get along with any body. It was weird he got along fine with my horses, well seemed to till he was here a few months then he started picking on the whole herd and would not give it a rest. It was like once he got comfortable with being here he just started bully everyone. Eric did offer to trade me another horse for him. Which I though was a nice of him and smart business practice but I decided to just sale him and get my numbers down a little. The people I sold him to had only one other horse a dominant mare they thought maybe it would work that there mare would put him in his place but it didn't. They had to keep them separated. Then shortly later I seen they had him for sale to. :( I don't know where he is now.
