I've given my horses ZG for years and never had any problems. However, I did an internet search yesterday and found that several people have had their horses experience mouth burns from this product. Does anyone here have any knowledge/experience with this? I just ordered some more from Jeffers yesterday and bless their hearts, they are so responsive to their customers that they shipped just a couple of hours after I ordered...so it's already on its way to me and too late to cancel .

There have been reports of ulceration of the gums with this product, but it's supposition and there is some doubt as to whether it's really a "chemical burn" sort of reaction because ivermectin given at that dose doesn't produce it and praziquantel doesn't produce it. And in combination, they still don't produce it in studies or with other products. It may be that what these people are seeing are reactions to bot larva that have migrated into the gums and are killed by the ivermectin because the body's reaction to "foreign bodies" (anything that isn't supposed to be in the tissues) is inflammation and that is more pronounced when you have a parasites, etc die in the tissues because they start to break down and now the body has nasty stuff to get rid of in there.

Thanks Ryle! I wondered if it was something like that, as I had never had any problems with ZG at all.

Hey vicklynn! As always, Ryle's answer was much more reasoned than the "ZOMG!!1!" ones I was seeing on my internet search ;)
