My friend got a new mare and she wanted to try her out on the trails. The mare had only been broke last year. I told her I would bring Dallas as I really trust him on the trails.
Dallas got to ride in the new trailer....I don't think he liked it..LOL..I think I likes the 2 horse better...so go figure. I hauled out to my friends house and headed out on the trails. Dallas was such a good boy as always, well exept for towards the end of the ride, he wouldn't go over the last two gates..(hard to explain, they are there for riders to go through) I had to get off him once and lead him over, and I finally got him to go over the last one. Goofy horse, :whack: we had gone over 5 of them throughout the day and he did just fine!
My friends little mare also did great! She could walk pretty fast and Dallas would have to keep up with her. So both horses and riders had a great day.
It's funny every trail ride I always use my daughters stuff and not my own BROWN saddle bags. LOL

Aah, how fun! Great pics; Dallas is such a pretty boy! I must admit, though, I'm kinda confused about the "going over" the gates. :p

Much different country than we ride through up here. You have funny trees, lol!
Neat to see all that distance though. I'd be temped to head straight for that rock and climb it!

Carla...LOL...let's see if I can explain about the "GATES".
Where we ride is all State land. It's all fenced off, so people can't drive their vehicles back there. But horse people are allowed to ride anywhere on the State Land. So along the fence line, they put what we call "gates". It's an opening wide enough for a horse to get through, but there is a bar going across the bottom that the horses have to step over. The purpose of this is to keep motorcycles out of the area. They can't life their motorcycles over that bar, but the horses can step over it or jump over....depending on the horse.
On my next ride I will take pics of the "gates" so you can see what I am talking about...LOL
In the early part of the ride Dallas will jump over them, in the middle of the ride he steps over them and towards the end today he decided he didn't want to go over the last two at all....LOL

I wasn't talking about the Mequite... I was talking about the stubby green ones with the arms. :D

I would definitely stay away from trees that can jump. I even try to avoid jumping shrubs :D
Just kidding. I've actually spent a bit of time in the desert down there, my dad's side of the family is from there, as well as my hubby's. Spent a couple summers in Phoenix in my youth, even. But never on horseback. In a month or so here it's gonna be too hot down there for me to take!

LMBO...:hysterical: Carla...you have GOT to make a trip to AZ.
"jumping cactus" otherwise known as Cholla are beautiful cactus bushes. there is one in the first picture on the right side of the trail. They have LOTS of cactus balls with very nasty hooks on them. Sometimes, if you are too close to them and hit a root, the cactus balls will fall off. Also, when you try to take them off, it hurts like heck and they stick or "jump" onto whatever is near or taking them off.
Horses, get them caught in their tails and legs....it's not fun. You have to use pliers or a big pick comb to get them off, and sometimes end up flicking them onto the other leg or yourself. Get one of those things stuck on the horses belly and you are in for a rodeo!!

Sounds like the plant version of a porcupine!
Definitely different country than what I'm used to riding in. It would be fun to see. It looks like beautiful country, despite the fact that everything will bite ya, stab ya or stick ya! Got that one from a John Wayne Western, he,he!
Loved the pics.

Nice pics CG.
Your friends mare is very pretty girl and of course, Dallas is just as handsome as he ever is, sleepy eyed and all LOL!
We have the same scenery and Biting Plants and I can relate to the mesquite tree's, cholla, and etc biting thingy's. I ride with needle nose pliers for the ops. That is the main reason why I will put the sports boots on my horses, to keep the needles/horns out of the horses legs.

LOL gaited, I usually carry pliers and a big comb. I bought Dallas some sport boots and still haven't used them. I didn't think I would need to, but when he was refusing to go over those last two gates, I was getting nervous. He would get up to the gate, stop then start backing up.....ugh! On the last one I got tired of messing with him....(it took almost 15 min. to get him over the one before) Sooo, I let him back up, then I turned him, then pushed him forward fast so he would have to jump it, and he did! Of course if he would have stopped, I might have gone over his head.....LOL
Dallas has him moments in the arena and in training, but on the trails I truely trust him and he trusts me. We have come a long way, and I am so confident in him on the trails, I would put my kids on him over Missy any day. :D
