So last week we had the whole ordeal with Tobey's sore back from a vetrolin incident. That cleared up completely in about 2 days and he was completely back to normal. I went out Sunday in the freezing rain and rode, (thank god for indoor arenas).
Well he had this small crack in his hoof last week that me and the owner just noticed, we assumed that it just broke surface last week and had likely been from some sort of injury to the coronet band a long time ago. We don't know how it happened but it is located on the inside of his front left hoof.
Here is a picture of it Sunday night. That is not blood, just Iodine we were using to prevent an abcess

Well I took many pictures and brought them in to work Monday. I work at a veterinary clinic, and while were small animal orientated everyone there owns, has owned, or at least been trained to work with horses. I got advice from the vets and they gave me flush syringes, betadine solution, etc. and wrote down advice and everything. A technician was even volunteering to come out, get a better look at it and file down a little bit to keep it from growing until a farrier could get out.
So I called the owner monday night and she said it was getting worse and she called the vet out for the next day (yesterday afternoon) to fix it ASAP. I went out yesterday to see and was able to make it out just as the vet began his procedure.
So they filed off about 1/8" just under the crack to prevent it from growing. They put a strip of metal over and screwed it in to hold it together, then sealed it with fake hoof goop. They said it will need to stay like that until it grows out, so about 6 months.
The amazing thing is, he doesn't need any stall rest at all. The vet said hes good to go back to riding immediatley. He can be jumped after the farrier trims his heel on that hoof tomarrow.
Its amazing what veterinarians can do. I was so afraid that Sunday would have been the last day I got to ride Tobey in 6+ months, but when the vet said hes fine I couldn't stop smiling.
So just thought I'd share all the events. After a rough past week, Tobey is back. I'll make sure to get some pictures of the metal patch when I go riding next time for yall.
