I had posted on here before about possibly half-leasing one of the arabian mares, but that didn't work out, the horses seemed fine but the owner wasn't. So I pretty much gave up and said it must not be in the cards right now.

Then yesterday I had a girl e-mail me. She has a young Irish sport horse mare who she is starting in dressage and I think will eventually be used in eventing. She is boarded at a place with an indoor arena, an outdoor, and access to trails, which is great. I've taken lessons at that stable before so I am somewhat familiar with it.

But the only problem is that I had set my limit at no further than 10 miles from my house and this place is 16 miles from me. So I'd be paying about 50 dollars a month just for gas, plus I'd pay $75 a month for the half-lease and $140 a month for my once a week lessons. Overall it would be $15 less than what I'm paying right now for 2 lessons a week, not counting the price of gas to drive to the place where I take lessons. (I pay for the lessons and my dad pays for the gas, but if I leased a horse I'd have to pay him for the gas to get there) My dad would have to drive me until I get my liscense, (which could be pretty much any time if he'll ever let me schedule the test) and he is grumbling about the distance.

So I guess what I am asking is, if I get along with her, this horse is pretty much exactly what I am looking for; is it worth it to pay $50 a month for gas and drive all the way across town, incurring my dad's anger at having to drive that much. Would you do it if the horse was a good fit for you? :help:

Sure. :) The grumbling about driving you might get your dad around to scheduling you for your driving test.

Doesn't hurt to go meet the lady, and her horse! :D

I would give it a try. Take dad with you so he can see if you get along with this horse. If you and the horse "gel" together, I think he would be more open to taking on the Taxi roll. :)

Well it depends on how grumbly your Dad is! If he's willing to do it and just grumble then I say go for it!!! Let us know what you decide!

Go see the horse and the owner....then put the argument for doing this to your Dad.....let us know how it goes;)

If this horse turns out to be exactly what you are looking for and you two click, then I say yes. If it is an 'iffy' or it could work, but not sure, I say no.

Okay, thanks everybody! I presented my case to my dad for the second time, but in a different way. I told him that there's no guarantees I will get along with the horse, but if things work out then she is pretty much exactly what I am looking for. I also explained that I usually don't have as many lessons in the winter anyways, they get cancelled due to cold, snow, etc. so I won't be spending as much money on lessons during the winter. He seemed mildly receptive. I'm going to e-mail the owner back, she said if I wanted to meet her and her horse this weekend she has saturday and sunday available. So maybe I'll meet her on Sunday. :)
