Well, I thought I'd give yall an update on how the horse situation is going. As you probably remember, me and my trainer started looking around about a month ago for something to buy together since my lease with Tobey was getting difficult.

So we have called a lot of sellers around the state, and visited several horses. Earlier in the week we even had one vet checked as we were pretty sure he was the one. He was a 17.1hh American Warmblood (Shire cross), 8 years old, Bay, had a lot of experiance and very well trained. We saw him a few times, watched his owner ride him, and I rode him. He was great. Super smooth ride, responsive, everything I could possibly ask for. Unfortunately, the vet check was very short (not in a good way).

He got out of the trailer and the vet was very impressed. She asked all the usual questions to me and to the seller. Then we took him inside to do a physical exam before doing the flex tests and everything else. Well, she checked his eyes, and then listened to his heart. And then she called the other vet in to also listen to his heart and they talked. Then she informed us that she would be stopping the vet check, because the horse had a loud murmur and an arythmia (not normal rythmn) and it was not worth going any further unless we wanted to take him somewhere to get an EKG and ecocardiogram done to check it out. She did do a stress test to see if it would go away with some exercise, but it did not. Well, we opted to not pursue any testing on him since it would be fairly pricey and the vet told us that honestly it would probably not work out anyway.

So, we're back on the hunt. We have a couple others we liked that we may go back and check out again. We've also got a ton more to call and go see. It was dissapointing but I'm not discouraged, I think we'll find something great.

The only bummer is that I don't have a horse to ride right now. I stopped leasing Tobey about a week ago, so now I'm just kind of bouncing around. I'm riding other horses if the owners ask me to, but nothing really consistent. So I may have to lease a different horse in the mean time to stay caught up with riding.

Just thought I'd give yall an update on the horse search. I'll let ya know if we find anything else and be sure to post pictures/video.

Are heart murmurs harmful to horses? I have a murmur, have had EKG's, echos, etc. and really it's not to big of of a deal...I'm guessing it's a completely different story for horses?

It depends on how severe the murmur is and what happens during exercise. This guy had a wierd rythmn on top of the murmur that made it especially concerning. It just means that the heart is working so much harder under stress and is not functioning properly. Not something you want to be on top of while doing a jumper round or running a cross country course. In Colorado last year we had three horses die on cross country courses, two of which had heart murmurs that the owners did not know about and just collapsed during the course from the stress. Just think how fast your horses heart has to beat when doing something physically exerting like Jumping, you definetly do not want blood backflowing out of the heart from a damaged valve AND have a heart that is beating correctly.

some horses have murmurs and they go away when the heart is put under stress from exercise and its never a problem.

Too bad about the American Warmblood having an arrhythmia and murmur, but you did the right thing.... that arrhythmia would have worried me too.

Hope something works out for you real soon, it's no fun being horseless.....let us know how it goes.
