So, I am on my way to take care of the horses and when I get to the barn door and try to open it, it's locked. Hmm, okay. I never lock the door so that was very strange. I crawl through the pasture fencing, walk around the pasture to get into the barn and I see that all three stalls have their lights on and the fan was on. Hmm, okay. I never leave those lights on ever and I haven't had the fan on for a few days since it is cold outside and there is no need for it. I now was about to slide the wooden door open to get to the tack room (obviously so I can unlock the door, get my horses grain/supplements, etc.) and the tack room light was on and sure enough the door was locked. Hmm, okay. In the tack room is the water thingy were I get the horses water from, the switches for all the lights and fans, my tack, horses grain, just about everything except the hay and sawdust. Another odd thing is when I switched the light switch that controls the four lights in front of the barn, it felt odd. I don't know how to explain it, but I switch that thing on every night and off every morning, I am accustomed to what it feels like. It just felt odd (I'm weird, I know =P). I already called both of my parents and asked if they went to see the horses, but neither of them have been in the barn for about a week now. One last odd thing, last night I had a freaky dream that I was home alone and my neighbors (they're a long story ) broke into my house. Strange much?
BTW, here is what my barn looks like (white door is the tackroom, two sliding huge door things, the front one remains closed and the back one is open because it is connected to the pasture and they can use the barn as shelter):
Both doors open:

Wow...keep an eye on the horses! That is really strange. Sounds like someone was looking for something specific???
When I brought my new Circle Y saddle in, one of the workers saw it and commented on what a NICE saddle it was. Two days later, the "locked" door on my trailer was hanging open. Luckily I keep that saddle at my house. Nothing was stolen, but I'm sure they were looking for that saddle.

Could it have been the owls?
cloedoll
10-16-2008, 10:12 AM
CG43 -- Yikes! Glad your saddle wasn't stolen. I don't get it, nobody around me is horsey at all. There are my other neighbors (not the one I mentioned in the original post), but they are my mom's best friends, sweet as can be, own their own four horses - they are well trusted friends of our family (called me when I was home alone and the tornado was hitting, called me when the 80mph winds were hitting, called me when the dude escaped from prison (I am sure you all remember that post), they always call and check in ;)), it wouldn't be them. So I don't know who would be looking for something and if so, what were they looking for that they thought it would be in a horse barn? Odd, odd people.
Could it have been the owls? THAT'S GOT TO BE IT! Crazy owls! I knew I didn't like 'em.

Definitely look for any sign someone's been on the property that shouldn't. That's alarming.
Is it possible to inadvertently flip those switches or for a critter to have done it?
cloedoll
10-16-2008, 10:17 AM
WB -- Definitely no way. The tack room light and lights for the front of the barn - that light switch is right to the left of you when you walk into the tack room. The stall lights are above a counter. The fan switch is high, high up. That would be one smart critter to climb that high and all over the place turning them all on (it would probably be easier to switch them off because the critter could just fall down, but to switch it up, that'd be harder). There also isn't a switch that turns everything on. And of course the locked door...so odd. =/

Well, I was thinking if something odd with the electric went wrong, the lights would turn on, but they doesn't mean the switch switches over. (Example, if the lights were off, something went wrong with the electric and triggered the lights on, the actual light switch wouldn't switch to "on," the lights would just be on :D).

Talk to your folks about this, which it seems you've already done.
If you can't come up with any reasonable explanation, I think it warrants a call to the police. Check it out... who knows what others might have reported around the area.
You don't want to go out there and surprise someone in there, not by yourself. How easy is it to get to your barn without someone being seen?

Um, if I'm not watching it, fairly easy I suppose. You know I have the intercom things, maybe I should set it up (I can lock it so it's always on, like a baby monitor) and listen to see if I hear anything...

Very good idea on the baby monitors. At the very least, you'll hear something amiss in the barn. Don't make it real visible.
You know... I've got a nifty alarm thingy that is not expensive, that I used when I lived alone. Door Knob Alarm (http://www.personalarms.com/home_alarms/door_knob_alarm.htm)
It's best for doors you don't use very often, it goes off at any motion. You hang it on the back side of the door. You wouldn't necessarily want it on doors you use, but you can, for the short term, to see if someone is going in there! They're remarkably loud. It'll startle the pants off someone who is not expecting it.
Try it around the horses first. ;) Make sure you aren't just going to frighten them out of their little skins if it goes off.
Pinky

There goes my idea then ;)
I'm with WB. You could try and set up CCTV (hide the camera in hay or something?) to see what you get. :)
And if that turns up with nothing...I'm with the supernatural school of thought.

Hmmm, someone must have been around. Less the horses know how to lock doors or the crows in the field.
The thing that REALLY sticks out is the feel of the light switch, I understand what your saying about the feel. I would have your dad come down and make sure the electrical stuff is ok... last thing you need IN a barn is a electrical problem!

She's not concerned that someone could have stolen property, injured or even attempted to steal your horses out of the barn? That they could havbe set the barn on fire? Or that you went out there, alone, and the person could have been dangerous and confornted you?
Oh my, that's scary. I hope you stay safe! Definitely take your feroucious dog out to the barn with you. Even if he's a love, if I remember right he's pretty big and intimidating.

UMMM mumsy, I'm not being ridiculous...ok, that was a mini vent, all done. :D I did put the baby monitor out there, but didn't hear anything. I want to bring Jaba out with me, but I did lock the door - for what reason, I don't know. So, I have to crawl through the pasture again, but if I bring Jaba he might get aggressive towards the horses (he got loose before, that was my little cousins fault, got into the pasture, Cloe chased him out (that was scary!) and kicked him in the ribs - he was fine, we ARE good doggy owners, I swear...we took him to the vet, he was fine...tough doggy...and he's a 100% indoor dog, so it was weird for him to be out...I just don't want you guys thinking we aren't good dog owners, that dog is my mother's baby...at this point she might be more concerned for him than me...), but I *think* I can control him, it's just always that what if..
Sorry, that post was extremely un-organied. =/

I'm accident prone (fell down the stairs and broke my foot in three places, was playing a memory card game and was resting my chin on my hand - hand slipped, cracked chin open and had to get stitches, I was the one holding my bird when he flew away...luckily we found him 3 days later, I bumped into a coffee table and had to get stitches on my eyebrow...the list goes on xD) so lets hope nothing goes bad with the dog!

Well, we made it back. Keidas was *extremely* interested in Jaba when I was going through the fence, my gosh...I got him to back off, though. We made it to the tack room and Jaba was so excited! It was really cute. He couldn't stop wagging his tail and he kept looking up at me like, "THANK YOU FOR GETTING ME OUT OF THE HOUSE!" Ha ha. I gave them their hay, grain, and water and I just had Jaba stand by the tack room's wooden door. Keidas was still eating his grain, but Cloe was eating her hay and kept looking up at Jaba and making her piggy noise, teehee. Jaba was very submissive and didn't want to really go near Keidas, but him and Cloe got pretty close! :D

Oh glad all was normal at the barn this morning. You had said you had a dream the night this all happened right. About neighbors breaking in. Have you ever sleep walked ? Maybe you did it during your dream. The reason I ask is my Mom has done similar things in her sleep. She didn't know she did it but my Dad caught her at it. She once tried to drive off and my Dad stopped her. Its scary thinking what people can do while sleep walking. My son one time tried leaving the house late one night. Thank goodness we were all up. He walked to the front door and we asked what he was doing (at first we didn't realize he was asleep). He said he was going to McDonalds and getting breakfast. LOL !! Of course we stopped him and turned him back towards his bed and he went right back in bed without awaking. He didn't remember it the next morning at all.

That is weird. I really like your barn. That's something I'd like to have with stalls etc. Did you build that yourselves or is there a co. that builds barns like that. I see you are in PA like I am. We have a barn with no stalls, it is a run in and holds hay. I'd love to have stalls in case one gets sick and needs to be in.
Hope nothing else weird happens. I know my boys can turn the lights on and off but they can't lock doors. You need one of those cameras that takes pictures if they are tripped. My brother in law put one of them down in the woods, you can't believe the photos he got. People trespassing, my husband mowing, bears, all kinds of things. That's a handy little thing to have in a case where someone might be messing with your stuff. It takes photos at night too.
