When it hurts him to do it. And that really depends. :)

Ok thanks WB, I really like jumping and I'm coming into it late in the game because I just got on an english kick.
Before I was pure western:)
Our stb/qh cross is 18
Our arab is 23
and our perchie is going on 4 (still to young, that I do know)
I like jumping on Buddy (18) and he is sound health wise and it doesnt seem to bother him
I havent jumped him since fall though because I'd rather us not slip and die on ice/mud/snow

Just keep an eye out and evaluate as you go. :)

It also depends on what you're jumping and how often. I still pop my 22 year old over cross rails occasionaly for fun. My cousin's 11 year old daughter has my old mare who is 28 now and she will do crossrails sometimes as well. Both horses are sound, healthy and ridden regularly. I wouldn't jump an older horse over anything they couldn't step over at a walk and I usually don't do more than 3 or 4 jumps in a riding session.

Could an abcess on one of his back hooves effect it at all?
He doesnt seem to be bothered by it now and it looks all healed up, like at all but he had one several months ago
