I heard some of this on the news this weekend and I'm trying to find additional information.

During his news conference, Blair also said the Obama administration is still wrestling with what to do with the remaining 240 detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, which the president has ordered closed.
Some of the detainees, deemed non-threatening, may be released into the United States as free men, Blair confirmed.
That would happen when they can't be returned to their home countries, because the governments either won't take them or the U.S. fears they will be abused or tortured. That is the case with 17 Uighurs (WEE'-gurz), Chinese Muslim separatists who were cleared for release from the jail long ago. The U.S. can't find a country willing to take them, and it will not turn them over to China.
Blair said the former prisoners would have [to] get some sort of assistance to start their new lives in the United States.
“We can't put them out on the street,” he said.

Well the big question is about the chinese detainees. We sent a couple of them back to China, and they were shot (by the Chinese govt) the minute they got off the plane, so they don't want to "repatriate" any more of them. But they are still muslim extremists that will re-join the jihad when they are let go.

The Justice Department is now arguing that they should just be set free in the U.S.

I voted for Chicago.

Yes... a nice warm-hearted liberal "Adopt-a-Jihadi" program! All those code-pinkos I'm sure will step up and put their money where their mouth is. I'm sure Cindy Sheehan would take two!

Though, now that I think about it... maybe not such a good idea. They're a little too idealogically similar.

I don't know a whole lot. They were part of a Muslim "separatist" movement in western China. This area borders on Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrghistan and a couple of other 'stans, and India/Kashmir. It would appear that they must then be connected to the Al Queda / Taliban infection that covers that whole region.

I would guess (but it is just a guess) that they were captured in Afghanistan, or perhaps India. I doubt that China gave them to us.

Obama seeks Muslims for White House posts

Barack Obama is conducting his own affirmative action program to get more Muslims in the White House.

The move began with Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn, who took his oath of office with a hand on the Quran, to solicit the resume of what he considered to be the nation's most qualified adherents of Islam.

According to the Denver Post, when White House officials heard about the program, it was put on overdrive.

So far, 45 Ivy League grads, Fortune 500 executives and government officials have been submitted for consideration.

J. Saleh Williams, program coordinator for the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association, sifted through more than 300 names as part of the search.

"It was mostly under the radar," Williams said. "We thought it would put (the president) in a precarious position. We didn't know how closely he wanted to appear to be working with the Muslim American community."

In 1991, Mohamed Akram wrote a memo for the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood that explained its work in America as "a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and 'sabotaging' its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God's religion is made victorious over all other religions."

If they are not US citizens, send them home or at least send them to a Muslim country. Wouldn't the Muslim nations want them back? I would think that our responsibility is to protect our nation, not them. They were incarcerated because they were a threat to our nation. Why should we support them as free men? Again, they aren't US citizens. :2cents:

Apparently not. No one wants trouble makers.

These guys are Chinese and apparently the last group we released back to China were shot when they got off the plane. We don't like that on our conscience, so... now that we have control over this group, it's our responsibility to figure out what to do with them.

I guess closing gitmo isn't as easy as it sounded during the election. :) Some of this stuff is tough!

Leave then where they are maybe? Yes , leave them there. On an island, away from the rest of the world. That's why they decided on building that prison in the first place.
Bring them here & we'll have to have special housing for them (& the other terrorists), their friends will have easier access to them, it will certainly cost more & they will be OUR neighbors.
Here's a 4th idea. Open the Gitmo doors, we leave & Cuba can take care of them or not.
