**edit**

Anyone up for a colt starting competition? I have acess to 200 unhandled adult horses stallions, gelding and mares, ranging from nasty rank evil monsters to fairly gentle, we can have our pick.

We can arrange the parameters, and dates to fit how and when the competition will take place. We can probably even get some PR reps, and set it up at a real venue and make some money.

We all talk the talk, but who here is willing to prove they can walk the walk?!

I think that sounds like a challenge. But I have one rank evil monster to deal with right now. One at a time please. But I do think it would be very interesting to watch. I really wish I lived closer to Texas sometimes.

My two feet stay on the ground when it comes to colt starting. . . at least at this point in my life. . . But I have started several in my time. . .but that certainly doesn't make me an expert at starting!! Finishing I like. . .

I'm in walkin. Just let me know when and rules. Are we picking up the horse and breaking at a seperate location, or meating up for a week or two and breaking only within that time frame? Please keep me informed and if it happens after June I am 100% in. I am tied though before then.

but I'm more into the ground manners aspect...I find I enjoy it more. I've backed a few horses before though, but I made sure they were the type of horse that was compatible with me first...LOL...a couple of 2 year olds...a 3 year old..a 4 year old and my haffy was 9 when she was first backed by me(untouched up until I got her..i started from scratch...talk about rewarding!!!)..and I restarted a slightly crazy 5 year old that adored me (another rewarding one...she didn't care for many people, and with my help, my former boss found a young 4-Her that she adored as much as she adored me and they are still together--6 years later!)

I'm thinking about using essentially the same rules as Road to the Horse. I'd like to extend the time limits and ditch the "no backing on the first day" rule though.

"When" is still totally open. It would take some time to book a location, and get some PR going. I'd like to see everyone go home with a little money in their pocket.

ETA: Oh, and I'd be setting it up here, and also taking local entries. I just came up with the idea this morning and none of it's really well organized in my head even.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I've never started a horse in this particular manner, but I'm always up for a challenge. Will have to see the dates since I've got my job from the beginning of June to the beginning of August, but if I can make it work, I would definitely give it a go. I've halter broken weanlings and put first rides on horses, but never done it all together in a short period of time. For the most, I get show prospects after their green broke and ready to start getting some experience. Guess this is a bit more of a western thing, but what the heck.... can I use english tack? ;)

But isn't that how most good stories end up?

I remember when I worked at the boy scout camp and we had staff prank week(Lord Of The Flies week we called it)...
"Remember that time when the staff pulling the pranks was dared to move all the furniture out of the bosses cabin and put it on the roof of the dining hall?" Is how that one starts out...

ends up with various pulled muscles, cuts, scraps, twisted ankles and wrists....

I think it was the 2 ladders and the bed we were trying to get up there that got us first....

then it was the couch....the chairs and tables were the easy things....

and yes, 5 of us ended up at the ER/Urgent Care...LOL
the next night we were out pulling another prank though!!!! Ahhhh..the lack of sleep we got that week :D

OK...

Here's the original text.

Excerpt from a recent thread. I'm not gonna put it in the thread, because most of us have enough self-respect to not involve ourselves in such drivel.

I have been breaking horses and been around horses since i was 5 years old breaking since 12 thats 22 years around horses and 15 years breaking them and I KNOW what I am doing we want some extra money who dosn't

Alright then Mr Crazy, prove it! I know a guy down the road from here that has about 200 unhandled adult horses. He's already given the OK for me to use them for the sake of clinics etc. Why don't we go on ahead and set ourselves up a little colt starting competition. Since most of this started over your stallion and your abilities to handle them, I'd say we use stallions. He's got them from rank nasty evil monsters to fairly gentle, but still unhandled. If that'd make you nervy, he's got mares and geldings too.

C'mon I'm sure we can all arrange it, anyone else that wants to join in can too. I'll be first to sign up. Heck, if you want to get some real bang for the buck, I bet we could even set it up at a rodeo. Who knows you might even learn a thing or two.

Are you game?! I'm betting no... I'm sure even you are smart enough to read between the lines and realize that I'm already making arrangements for my own horsemanship clinics. That and I'm sure your time picking eggs is more valuable.

A little note for the kids who still live at home because you have mommy and daddy to help pay your bills dont think that oks you to tell others who actually have to work and make money in this industry that what their doing is wrong. it may not be what you or anyone else here would do and thats fine with us but at least show some support even if you dont think its right we ALWAYS support you even when you do assinine things is it to much to ask all of you to do the same
I guess technically speaking I do live at home, however they don't pay my bills. I live on the family horse ranch, I'm responsible for the care, training, and reproduction of 5 stallions, living here is just a matter of convienience.

I'm not nessicarily saying what you are doing is wrong, I'm saying is ignorant and foolish, and I HIGHLY doubt that I'm saying that to anyone actually "making money" in this industry. It's a subsidized hobby at best.

I hear and see so many "HORSE TRAINERS" here on the forum and advertised that know jack squat and are afraid of their own horses, but claim they can train horses and other peoples horses TOO ?????
Just because you watched the Horse Whisper (etc) doesn't mean your a trainer:p
After seeing numerous posts about these wonders throughout the years and some new ones more recent, I just find it entertaining. I just sit back and wait for the train wreck to happen.

I don't want or wish anyone harm but those who sit there and brag or falsified their training credentials in order to rip off the public is a sickening SIN and a horse should buck them off!

What is funny is that the horse world is very small world and someone knows someone and word always gets around especially about bullshit trainers!

Again Walkin, I would love to watch and tape all the wonderful events and blunders.
Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few of us who know how to train horses and those who are capable and willing to listen to learn. I'm referring to, oh you know who you are!!!!!!! And if this person wants to challenge me, I would be more than happy to accept my knowledge verse theirs any day;)

I stand behind my fiance in his skills and abilities with horses. He hasn't said anything false about his experience with horses. We've had Dakotah maybe a month now, he was barely touched and we had him halter broke and leading and tying within a couple days and we saddled him for the first time today and he never bucked. Breaking horses isn't rocket science..you just have to know how to do the prep work. He's handled stallions and so have I. I've handled horses that chased their old owners out of the pasture, horses deemed to be unmanageable and dangerous. The forum probably won't get anything out of it if he can't break a horse in the time given but it won't really mean anything or change anything to us.

Wow I'm usually a quiet laid back person on this forum but you guys just irritate me. I can't bite my tunge no longer. If you break it you break it. I'v watched my dad break many horses and I'v finished some too. I say I am not the most knowledgeable(sp) wich is why I'm willing to take criticisim and learn from it on here. If you accept the chellange then you have to abide by the rules including finishing ON TIME. But your so great I bet you'll be done before everyone even arrives:rolleyes:(note sarcasm)

Oh and BTW there's a huge differnce from a wittle halter breaking and the actual first rides incase you didn't know:rolleyes:.

Saying that because you've been around horses for x many years you are a God of horses isn't a very good argument. I know some people who have had 40+ years experience raising, breeding and training horses and they still don't have a clue, or even anything close to it. Not one of their horses is actually broke, they all buck, they're all flighty, unresponsive and stubborn. Time after time they keep blaming it on the horse, that it's in the horse's temperament to buck, or spook or never ever listen. Experience is when you're able to soak up all the knowledge around you and be able to grow and learn from others and what's happened in your life. Not just being born into something therefore assuming you know everything about it.

But hey, maybe you'll prove us all wrong and end up training the snot out of the horse..... then we'll just think of you as someone who can train a horse, but makes horrible choices and keeps goats in kitchens.

mandascrazycowboy
03-30-2009, 10:48 PM
you should apologize for starting this b-s all we asked for was a confo critique not a lecture on if you all approved of what we were doing so yeah you do need to apologize. if i started the crap id apologize but i didn't so I wont. And painted dreamer you start crap with people you dont know. all I ever said was we wanted a CONFO critique not a life critique. I never said I was BETTER then anyone, but I am a whole heck of a lot more respectfull of peoples decisions on this forum then 95% of the rest. I say 95% because some are great people others leave alot to be desired in the human race. WB I am sorry if this is a blunt or rude post but what some people are saying is rude towards me and my fiancee something we aren't towards anyone else or havent been till now. If I am out of line just let me know and ill tone it down but please ask others the same thing

Crazies, this is a forum. Whenever you post something you gets opinions, asked for or not. You can't wave something so juicy under our noses and just expect us all to ignore it. And if everyone here is so mean to you and horrible..... why do you keep coming back for more?

CrazyManda
03-30-2009, 10:55 PM
Okkkkkk...somebody just isn't listening to US. First off zoel, we no longer have ANY goats and they stayed inside for ONE night while we got their pen ready...we have told the forum this yet nobody has caught on to that. Goats are gone....don't even bring up goats in the kitchen anymore. Second zoel....we never ever not ONCE claimed to know everything about horses or said we were God of horses. If those people who have 40 years experience with horses don't have any horses better than what you described then they probably shouldn't have horses. They sound like idiots. And experience is when your able to LEARN and actually USE it and get results. This comes with time around horses and actually working with them..not going out and hiring "pros" when your pony gets one tiny bad habit.

CrazyManda
03-30-2009, 10:57 PM
Because we like the wealth of knowledge on here about horses..not managing our lives. Can you show me where we asked for a critique or any opinions on if getting a breeding stallion was a good thing? Nope, ya sure can't because we never asked for it. We wanted to know what people thought of confo and pedigree, not our choices. We don't need to get dragged into anything else or bad mouthed. There sure is a lot of favoritism on this board.

you should apologize for starting this b-s all we asked for was a confo critique not a lecture on if you all approved of what we were doing so yeah you do need to apologize. ....Thanks
Mandascrazycowboy.

Dude.... I have NEVER once been rude to you or you girl. I have only given opinions when asked and never done a personal attack towards either of you. I will NOT be one to apologize for your attitude just now to me was uncalled for.

And yes you will be asked to anny up if you do not make any progress in the field. There are many lessons that everyone will learn during all of this you both included.

I understand your frustrations with your thread and I never attacked you on it in fact I invited you elsewhere so you could let that drama die, and just talk horses like you wanted.

I was asking with a neutral stance so please refrain from attacking me or giving me attitude when I have done nothing of the sort to you.

I personally am looking forward to this, Not because I think I am better than anyone but because I want to see just how good I really am and see just how far I can go. Shouldn't that be your goal too? The interest lies in What you can do, not what you can brag about.

OK - So here's the deal. If this little challenge is actually going to take place, then those actually playing can work out the details on this thread. That's it.

Let's have the stone throwing jeering bystanders hold their fire.

If it's not going to take place, well... then we all need to find another hobby.

Oh god, how old are some of you people. Can't you just drop this stupid issue.

..This whole thing is making the forum look bad. I think its time to grow up. Really.

Appylover, I don't really think he was directing it at you specifically, sorry if it sounded like he was. There have been several people give us their opinion on what we asked for and they even said in a very NICE way that they didn't really agree with breeding or whatever, gave their reasons, and that was it. They didn't trash us or gripe about anything else. I LOVE this forum, I like learning and we DO learn here, but when it seems we get trashed for just about everything we do it kinda gets us riled. We already know we're crazy but nobody on here knows squat about us or about our situation and until you do we'd really like to not hear a life critique on us. The economy does suck but people are still breeding horses and to whoever said breeding shouldn't be to make money, but to better the breed, show me ANY good breeder who doesn't have a stud fee and are only doing it to better the breed. People do it to make money...how do breeding farms stay in business? What we plan with our stud is the norm here and it doesn't mean we'll get crappy mares all the time.

[...]People do it to make money...how do breeding farms stay in business? [...].

The only ones REALLY making money are the BIG ones(mostly T-Bred), who have stallions that command $1.5M stud fees. I am a Clydesdale breeder, and even with my $1000 stud fee, I'd have to breed about 15 outside mares to make my horse operation break even. If you honestly think you are making money, I would advise you to hire an accountant, and take into consideration ALL of your costs, and you will see you probably aren't even CLOSE to "making" money.

I make more money from wagon rides than I do breedings.

I would take one of your bad breedings or whatever you call ithem anyday. Your breedings I am sure are well worth the $. From what I understand the stallions that command that type of money to breed are very difficult to get. Your mare must have some wonderful lines in her to qualify. The stallion owners take great care in preserving their lines. I think I would be a nervous wreck if I ever had a horse even close to being worth that much. He/She would be in a padded stall all day to prevent any injury.... wishful thinking on my part!!

I wasn't looking to start a pissing match here people. I could care less about who and what he wants to breed to. I think he's mistaken if he thinks they can make money breeding a no-name horse to no-name mares.

This is about the OP (now on page 6) and his smart arse comment about knowing what he's doing because he's done it for x number of years. There's a saying on the farriers board that goes "20 years of doing something wrong doesn't mean you know what you're doing, it only means you are really good at doing it wrong."

I just want to separate the men from the boys. I will say though even if you win, all that proves is that you can work a horse. Most of what you are being chastised for here is your lack of business sense. That will take years for you to prove, right or wrong.

I just want to see if you really have the chops to really teach a horse something, that's all.

I'm gonna send off a few e-mails today. I'm a member of some NH groups as well as a local barrel horse assn, and have ties to several other groups of show and speed ponies. I'll give it a couple days, and then make some follow up calls later in the week.

WB, I think it's best you just lock the thread. I was hoping the bickering wouldn't carry over, but Mr Crazy brought it with him.

Thank you.

I understand your frustrations (honestly I am not just saying that). And my opinions aside, what you choose to do with your horses is up to you. And up until now did not even really put two and two together that this challenge started where it did (I had my suspicions), but really I thought it sounded like an awesome opportunity to see what "we" could all do.

I am going to make a suggestion (weather it is wanted or not) that the "bargain" be antied up by the two persons this is obviously between. Because both will be eating a little humble pie if this goes through and they "prove" themselves even in a little way. I don't agree with attacking the forum, some people really where not trying to jump on or attack just ask questions.

I think (in my very humble opinion) that all attitudes need to be dropped if this is going to be a real event to happen. We all will have to put egos aside for the good of the horse we will work with. Progress can not be forced on a horse who isn't ready and we all must be ready to say, "I am out of my league and will not push this horse any further."

And on a note directed to our crazy couple. I wish you luck in your goals. You can learn a lot from other people, some honestly have good things to teach. Don't shut them off because a few have given opinions when unasked for. This board has a wealth of information. Try and forgive those who have "given their opinions harshly."

Let us all move on and pull our noses out of their lives. We should respect their wishes and talk about the issues they have shared with us. We do that for everyone else. Trust me when I tell you that this couple are not the only ones on the board who have made, or a making mistakes. Let us remember we are all human and completely imperfect.

Ooops - sorry Appy. We cross posted.

I thought your post might be a good end. Good thoughts there to reflect on. Let them try again in another thread that doesn't already have so much poo flung on the walls.
