I have a relatively new Wintec 500 AP saddle, and it rolls with a saddle pad on both of my horses. The gullet is the right gullet measured twice and the saddle fits. It does not roll on either of the horses when there is no saddle pad.

I wouldn't mind riding without a pad all of the time, but 1) I have to switch between two horses and I'm worried about any kind of skin problems and 2) I have tons of saddle pads of varying thickness and material.

Does anyone know why the saddle would roll with a pad, and not roll without? All of the pads have been used without problems with my old saddle, so I don't understand the problems with this one.

What kind of saddle pad are you using with it?

Yeah - what kind of pad... and are you cinching it up tight enough? Are these real mutton withered horses?

What WBay and HPH said. :)

Here's some I could find online:

I have two others that are like the last one in the way the're made; I also have one that is cotton on the bottom and a smoother cloth on top.

ETA: I don't think they're mutton withered, at least Cheyenne isn't. Fred might be. I am cinching it up tight enough; that's the first thing I checked.

Another edit: It's happened since the first time I've used the saddle with a pad. Several times of riding without the pad produced no slipping, even after a small buck and canter.

Just little thin square pads like that? Huh.... I dunno, other than maybe you just aren't cinching firm enough. Thin pads like that shouldn't make the saddle not fit.

Are you using show sheen or fly spray on the back of the horse?

I know I switched griths with the new saddle; for whatever reason I thought that the girth I already had didn't have rollers on both ends, so I got a synthetic one with fleece. When I cleaned out my trailer tack room I noticed that my leather ones were fine. Should I try those with it? Could the different girth be throwing off what I consider to be "right" as far as cinching?

Could be the change in girth. It may be the fleece girth is slippery-er... might even be that the elastic on it is 'stretchier'.
