I bought some powdered asprin for Mack for the days when his BL solution doesn't cut it for his arthritis and when I opened it I nearly choked on my tongue!!! It smells bitter and burns your nose!!! Is that normal? Could it be rancid or something? I can't imagine getting a horse to eat it!!! I didn't even sniff it on purpose!!! Just breathing around it cause a bit of pain and watery eyes. . .

Gosh.... I have used aspirin on one of my horses before but the vet just recommended I buy the human form (because it was cheaper) and to put them through a coffee grinder or let them dissolve before adding it to the mash. So, aspirin is very bitter and certainly doesn't taste good, but it never smelled rancid or burnt my eyes. I find that odd.

I did too!!! I think I'll just throw it away. . .Kind of strange. Has anyone else ever used horse asprin?

I used Anaprin a few months ago for my mare. Not for very long though. Sure wish they had something more long term without the bad effects because I'd use it on Dude in that case.

Rancid? No, that's weird. I used aspirin on some arthritic ones and it had a strong odor but not like you're describing. How old is it? Maybe it's been sitting around and hasn't been opened in ...years?

MSM and double the B-L Solution- those were my vet's reccomendations for Gypsy.

The double dose may not be able to be used long term, but 20 grams of MSM can, which will help take down inflamation, therefore, hopefully helping the B-L solutiion work better.

Are you feeding a regular joint supplement? Something with Glucosamine, Chondroitin and HA in it? The HA will help will help lubricate the joints, and the other two are believed to help slow or even stop in some cases the joint deterioration process.

Good to know. I think I'm going to just throw it (the aspirin) out. Not worth risking anything. . . Won't buy it again that's for sure!

What's B-L solution? And HA?

B-L solution is "Bute-Less" it's a supplement that has devils claw and yucca (I believe) in it to help relieve pain without using bute. I use it for my gelding with arthritis.

HA is hyaluronic acid which is the substance that cushions joints. . Joint Supplements have embraced it in the last 10 years thats for sure. I remember when the first joint supplement with HA came out and it was SOOOO expensive. Before that it was just available as injections I believe.

Oh you bought the horse kind? Huh.. We've gotten it before but we didn't have any problems... If you haven't thrown it away yet, check if there is a date on it. Is it old??
