View Full Version : Cane is having surgery

Well we made the decision!!!! And I called and set everything up.

I haul him down VERY EARLY Monday a.m., the get the sample for stem cells. Tuesday he hangs out and makes everyone fall in love with him. Wednesday surgery and it can take from 1-3 hours depending on what they find with the tendon. (Tanya on pins and needles all day), Thursday he is a good boy and rests, Friday I get to pick him up (hopefully if all goes well).

One of my best friends is coming over this weekend to bathe him with me and braid his mane. She has lost two horses in the past 10 yrs very tramatically and has given me some pointers on IF things go wrong the best way to be prepared. I will have a section of his tail braided so SHOULD thing go wrong and I lose him they can cut it for me and I can have it made into something. She did this with her last horse and said it worked great and that way you always have a piece of your heart with you. Cane's mane is very long so braiding it will make it easier for the vets.

I talked with the insurance and they will pay the first $3300, which is the remainer of what I have left for coverage. I relize not everyone would do the surgery, but since it is the insurance companies money why not help them spend it. I feel at this point it is nothing ventured nothing gained.

I will keep you posted.

TanyaC where is the surgery being done? Are you coming all the way down to Tuffs?
I still have some of Jet Lag's tail I haven't done anything with it yet but now I'm thinking of pulling some of Lil'Bits tail to add with his and having a necklace made.
Keep us posted and if your down my way just let me know if you need anything - even just a little moral support.

I am having it done at New England Equine Surgical & Med in Dover NH. They have been great and have come highly recommended.

I just got CRAP from one of my boss's for coming in late on Monday. "Is this really a critical thing?"

All the best To you and Cane and all the medical staff. I know this is a big chance to take, and I hope for the best. :)

Well looks like you have it under control! Hopefully surgery will go well and you'll be turning barrels in a year or two. Poor fella. The tail and mane thing is a good idea. Plus it'll keep the tail out of the way while they do the surgery! You're in my prayers, keep us posted!

vick-I have two "people" that I report too. If one says yes the other always says no. This is the one who I have to "check in" with first. I was about ready to act like on of my students and things changed.

Gypsy-This is all from a VERY VERY VERY small puncture wound and tendon sheath infection Memorial Weekend. I have had months of ups and downs, ultrasound therapy, shockwave therapy, stall rest, hand-walking, you name it we did it. The biggest lesson I have learned is thank heavens for my insurance, and to listen to the vets, but also not be afraid to get second, third or even fourth opinions.

WB- thanks for posting the link. I may have to be "sick" Wednesday and just stay home and wait for the phone to ring.

Thanks for all the good hopes and prayers.

Well we loaded up this a.m. at 6:00 with a very heavy frost. Cane thought I was crazy and was NOT going to get on the trailer. So I put a chain over his nose (code for mom means business) hubby stood behind him and he jumped right on. He was NOT happy about not having any breakfast either, I don't haul with hay (long story). We headed out and got there right at 8:00. I only had to slam on the brakes once when an old duffer pulled his new BMW right infront of my and stopped. GRRRRRR

He got off the trailer and did fine in his new stall. He notice who was across from him, a very cute black arab mare. He has had his fat taken for his stem cell already an as long as it comes back in time he will have surgery Wednesday.

I did not clean his stall this a.m. and it will not be easy to do tonight, but I will get it done. I fussed with him yesterday making him look awesome with his braided mane and tail.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and I will keep you posted.

I forgot to say....

When I was walking down to the barn this a.m. I looked up and saw a shooting star. Hubby noticed my eyes water up and told me that was good luck. While driving down the road everything hit me again all at once (that has not happened for a couple of days) and I looked up and saw a second shooting star. I have not seen a shooting star in a long time. I really hope it was a good sign.

Today seems like a calm day. I called just to check on him and he is doing great. He has a g/f in the stall across from him and is doing fine. Tomorrow will be a different story. I will call in the a.m. to see if he is still scheduled, as that may change if the stem cells do not come back in time.

It was REALLY weird being in the barn without him................

Thanks guys for keeping us in your thoughts.
