View Full Version : Kito gave me a scare this morning

Kito is my African Grey for those who don't know him. He's about 16 months old now I think. His night cage is a small cage that I also use for traveling. It has two latches, one top and one bottom. Somehow he managed to get the bottom latch undone and stuck his head out the bottom - then he was stuck.

I walked in my room to get him and was so scared when I saw his head twisted upwards and him stuck. He is okay - he has a small scrape on the top of his head (not bleeding), and his skin where his neck was stuck is raw/red looking. He is extremely tired right now - very unusual, he is generally climbing the walls at this time of day. He won't eat/drink and is trembling a little. :(
He has a vet appointment today at 2. He seems to be fine but birds are very sensitive - better safe than sorry.

Anywho I've been meaning to get some new pics up of him, I will try and do that today.

Oh my gosh!! Yes, please do take him to the vet!! That is why I have locks on all the doors and openings on Notsu's (my female African Grey) cage because she is a houdini! I am sending you all kinds of prayers that he is ok!! He maybe just in shock! But that can be so serious! Keep us posted and I would love to see pictures of him!! This is my girl!

Oh no, poor Kito. Please let us know how his appointment goes and do put some locks on his door. You be careful little Mr. Kito.

And we are waaay overdue for Kito photos. When you were gone for awhile and we thought you may have left the forum for good, I was bummed that I wouldn't be able to keep up with Kito's progress. :)

Thank you very much everyone. Domino, Notsu is stunning - what a pretty girl!

We're back from the vet's now and Kito is sleeping, my poor babe! He does have some bruising on his neck (), so it is a little sore/tender. She also did a full check of him and other than that he is in good condition so that's a relief. I'm always afraid he's underweight. Anyway, she gave him an anti-inflammatory (I think) shot and since he wouldn't eat today she also tube fed him some nutrients...I really didn't like watching that but it had to be done. We got 7 days of the pain meds to give him in a syringe. Tonight I'll try and make something irresistible for him to eat.

So thanks for the prayers/thoughts/vibes guys, he's sore but he's okay! Yes we're going to get a big clip for the night cage and until then he'll just sleep in his big cage.

I know, I know, I need to get pics :)...he's looking a little rough because he is molting lol, but I will get some when he's done sleeping...don't want to disturb his rest, he needs it.

About that weight, Notsu is a small girl. She was the smallest in the clutch, and she still is small. I have an scale that I keep track of her weight with. I weigh her every morning after the big poop.:puke: That is how I keep track on if she is staying at weight. It does not take long for them to lose it so I stay on top of that! Of course with all the good food she gets daily it is not a problem. She eats a lot better then I do! Glad he is going to be ok! Poor baby!! Keep us posted on his progress! Give him an almond for Notsu! (Notsu's favorite nut) ;-)

Oh gosh, that had to have been a scare. I'm glad he is OK. Poor thing I bet he is stiff and sore, I hope he eats good for you tonight.

Notsu is so pretty. African Greys really are so gorgeous.

Kito loves almonds too :)

He is still napping and I love seeing him sleep so I won't take any pics today, but I found some pics from his first birthday in December. Here they are (I made that cake, don't laugh, it had to be bird-friendly :p):

He is very good, thanks for asking. He woke me up with his 'HI KITO!" and loud whistling from the living room :). He was very good about taking a syringe of meds, too...hopefully it helps with the soreness.
